FGSR Highlights

If you want to know more about how graduate-level research happening at the University of Regina can make a difference in our community, join us for the Social Innovation Summit on April 6 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in Luther College Room 100. Over the past three months, eight of our graduate students have been collaborating with more than 20 non-profits and social organizations to align their work to address community needs. We hope you'll come out to hear their ideas and support local social innovation!

Kickstart Pitch Summit

Kickstart, a program of the University of Regina’s Graduate Advanced Training & Entrepreneurship (GATE) Centre, supports undergraduate and graduate students with innovative ideas for start-ups by providing mentorship on how to turn their concepts into realities.


Six successful Kickstart applicants who have received 12 weeks of training by accelerator, Foresight Canada, will be pitching their projects to industry judges at a special summit at Innovation Place on April 28 at 10 a.m. We hope to see you there to support the students and celebrate the growing entrepreneurial culture at the U of R and in innovation, business and the tech sector in Saskatchewan.

Call for Outstanding Supervisor Nominations

Do you have a great supervisor? The Award for Outstanding Graduate Supervision recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated a record of excellent mentorship and supervision of graduate students at the University of Regina. The winner will be nominated for the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies (CAGS) Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentorship. The nomination deadline has been extended until April 30. Consider nominating your supervisor!

Thesis submission deadlines:

Spring/Summer term PhD thesis submission deadline: June 2, 2023.

Winter term Master’s thesis submission deadline: June 30, 2023.


Convocation:

Fall (October) Convocation application deadline: July 31, 2023.

Grad Spotlight

U of R crowns 2023 3MT champion

Psychology graduate student Andy McLennan is pictured presenting his research during the University of Regina Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition at Darke Hall on March 28. He won first place for his delivery of his project Pain in Dementia: How to Assess Pain When No One is Speaking.

Andy McLennan, a master of science psychology student studying under Dr. Thomas Hadjistavropoulos, was crowned the champion of the University of Regina Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition held at Darke Hall on March 28.


McLennan — whose presentation was titled, Pain in Dementia: How to Assess Pain When No One is Speaking — will go on to the 3MT Western Regional competition, which will take place at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon on May 25.


3MT showcases and celebrates graduate-level research, challenging students to present their work an accessible and compelling way to engage others outside of their fields in three minutes or less — with the assistance of just one static slide.


Megan Poulter won second prize, David Akinmade placed third and Nahanni Young was voted the People's Choice by the audience of about 150 people.

U of R launches new research podcast

Listen up! The University of Regina has a new limited-series, research-focused podcast, Go far, Together. This podcast will introduce you to some of our University’s brightest thinkers. From outer space to Reconciliation, from first-responders’ mental health to the connection between cannabis and the NFL, it explores how these researchers are changing the world and how we understand it, right here on the Prairies!


Cultural Creativity Session at the ta-tawâw Centre

Please come out to the ta-tawâw Student Centre (RIC 108) to learn some Indigenous bead-work skills and create some simple projects (or more advanced if you wish). We will provide instructions and materials for you. The Cultural Creativity sessions run each Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. and Friday from 1-4 p.m., with our instructor Connie Mussell.


Breath, Sound, Silence (meditation/relaxation sessions)

U of R Humanities Research Institute Guest Scholar Stacey Bliss holds meditation/relaxation sessions on Tuesday evenings from 9-9:30 p.m. During these 30-minute sessions, which will continue until April 11, participants meditate on their breath or a focal point, enjoy soundscapes and then conclude with silence. These sessions are free for students, sessional instructors and folks with limited income. Once you register here, you'll receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link.


What are Universities For? Exploring roles, challenges, conflicting tensions, and promising re-imaginings

There are 10 free spots for graduate students to attend this symposium May 4, 5 & 6. Beyond that, the registration fee is $325, with opportunities for sessional and graduate student subsidies, & includes breakfast, lunch & dinner each day). Registration is hard-capped at 180. There will be a free pre-symposium panel May 3 at Darke Hall, capped at 450. This session is hosted by President Jeff Keshen and will be moderated by the award-winning journalist, Nahlah Ayed and recorded for CBC IDEAS. Chancellor's Mother's Day Concert with Malcolm Lowe

The University of Regina is pleased to welcome home Malcolm Lowe, an Honorary Degree Recipient and the former concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, for a special concert at Darke Hall on Sunday, May 14 at 2 p.m. Presenting a retrospective of some of the music he first learned and played at the U of R Conservatory of Performing Arts, he will be joined by special guest pianist Rachel Andrist,the Conservatory's Head of Accompaniment. Tickets are available at darkehall.ca.


Mitacs, Open Projects Request for Graduate Researchers

Open Projects or (Request for Researchers (RFRs) service at Mitacs is dedicated to Businesses and not-for-profit organizations looking for the right researcher to support them in their innovation projects. Mitacs works with domestic and international partners to circulate your opportunity throughout our post-secondary networks to find you candidates who are the best fit and put their skills and knowledge into practice. If you find the right project, Mitacs will connect you to the company to discuss and develop the Mitacs research proposal. If you are a researcher (undergrad, grad student or postdoc), explore the available projects using the filters, and apply using the link at the end of the project description.
