FGSR Highlights
Black History Month

FGSR is inviting graduate students, faculty and staff to engage in Black History Month commemorations and events in recognition of the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. We are proud to celebrate our connections and commitment to anti-oppression as we collectively combat discrimination and anti-Black racism. In that spirit, we share with you below some helpful resources.
Lunar New Year 2022

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is the most important festival in China and a major event in some other East Asian countries (Lunar New Year is known as Seollal in South Korea, Tet in Vietnam, and Tsagaan Sar in Mongolian).

Chinese New Year 2022 will fall on Tuesday, February 1st, 2022, beginning a year of the Tiger. China's public holiday will be from January 31st to February 6th, 2022.
3MT Competition
Preparations for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) are currently underway. The 3MT provides graduate students with an excellent opportunity to develop presentation and communication skills and receive expert feedback and hands on workshops and training. The internationally recognized competition invites thesis based graduate students to present their work and its wider impact in 3 minutes or less using only one static slide.

In order to make it to the finals, you need to compete in one of the heats on March 8 at 7:00 PM or March 9 at 1:30 PM with the top 8 moving on to the finals on March 22. The winner will receive a $1500 prize and move on to the Western Regional Finals. Runner-up and the People’s Choice winners will receive prizes as well.

Register today for one of the heats to participate here

We are planning for in-person sessions with the understanding that we may have to go online. It will be a live presentation either way. For more information on the 3MT event, please go here

Black History Month

Fred Hampton, the leader of the Black Panther Party, and two other fellow Panthers visited the University of Regina in 1969 (U of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus at that time). In his speech, attended by about 600-700 people, he talked about racial injustice, promoted radical activism and the idea of oppressed people independently of race, needed to come together and be united. These topics resonated greatly with familiar problems in the Prairies. If you want to know more, you can read the entire article in: Dawn Flood, "A Black Panther in the Great White North: Fred Hampton Visits Saskatchewan, 1969," Journal for the Study of Radicalism, vol. 8 no. 2 (Fall 2014): 21-49. Dr. Flood is an Associate Professor in History (Campion) she also teaches HIS 432/832 "Black Power in US History"

For more information on racism and anti-Black racism, we encourage you to use Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion’s educational guide on racism and anti-Black racism. We hope you find this guide useful, not only for Black History Month, but as part of your diversity, equity and inclusion journey. Learn more about Black History in Canada here
