Latoya Reid
Grad Spotlight
Latoya T. Reid is a masters trained and registered social worker, and also a trained teacher (certified through Sam Sharpe Teachers College) who is a native of Montego Bay, Jamaica. She immigrated to Canada in 2015 with her husband and 2 young children. Her experience in human service spans over 15 years ranging from teaching to various branches of social work, including: health care, addictions counsellor, assessor coordinating, case management, child welfare, advocacy, research and analysis, activism, public speaking, training, among others.

Latoya prides herself in being a catalyst of positive change so that others can become empowered to gain a more positive self-image and regain the power to resist future instances of oppression in their lives. She praises herself as a decolonizing therapist who seeks to remove the stigma from seeking mental health support by using a culturally diverse and trauma informed lens. Latoya believes in the power of inclusivity, and this was the impetus for her starting her own clinical practice: Altoyathetherapist.

Thank you, Latoya, for being an example of graduate student success and leadership, and for sharing your experience with us!

De/Colonizing Educational Relationships in Teacher Education
Nov. 6, 8:30 am - to Nov. 7, 3:00 pm. Online
All faculty and students are invited to take part in this weekend retreat during which we will be discussing the de/colonial imaginary we have developed as a result of 12 years of research in a Canadian teacher education context (Pirbhai-Illich & Martin, 2020). In thinking about how we might de/colonise our educational relations, we will focus on multiple forms of relationality including spiritual, environmental, socio-cultural, and historical-political. The aims of the weekend are to develop: understanding of de/coloniality; relation to colonising ways of being, doing, and knowing and how this influences your [teacher] educator identities and practices; and understanding of how it might be possible to create de/colonial spaces for teaching and learning. For more information, refer to the flyer. Register here
