FGSR Highlights

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The FGSR team was proud to show support for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as part of our strong commitment to decolonizing graduate education. As the Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission pointed out: "Education got us into this mess and education will get us out of it."

Graduate Research Conference: Innovation Translation

Graduate students at any stage of their research are invited to participate in the Graduate Research Conference on Saturday, Oct 22, 2022. Innovation Knowledge Translation is about taking your work and making it accessible to a general audience. The pandemic has precluded many graduate students from participating in conferences, so this is a great opportunity to present your work and build your communication skills in an interdisciplinary conference environment. You can choose a four minute presentation or be part of the poster session. You will get feedback and FGSR will even cover the costs of printing the posters. This event is free.

How to turn an idea into a start-up.

Do you have a business idea? Foresight Canada has years of experience in turning ideas into businesses. In this workshop, they walk through a roadmap for creating your own start-up. They will also let you know of some of the resources that are available to you including the U of R Kickstart program.

FGSR has partnered with Foresight Canada as part of the GATE Centre’s entrepreneurship and innovation activities that are available for U of R students. This workshop is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Please register to receive the Zoom link

The Dispute Resolution Office in the Ministry of Justice is offering a two-part workshop with Mediator Breda O'Reilly. The training will provide participants with the opportunity to develop tools and improve skills in problem solving and conflict management on an interpersonal basis. The course includes skill building through theoretical discussion based on questions from participants.

Coffee with the Dean

Every month, FGSR Dean Dr. Aziz Douai meets graduate students to discuss issues important to graduate student success. Thanks to everyone who attended our last discussion on student leadership (photo above). Our upcoming “Coffee with the Dean” meeting will look at Diversity and will feature Pauline Streete, Senior Advisor to the President on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Oppression. We hope to bridge this conversation into a leadership forum for our Diversity group on campus to make the U of R a more welcoming place for all students. Come join us on October 25 at 2:30 pm in CK 226, and we will have coffee, tea and donuts. Register here

Grad Night at the Owl

Do you know that graduate students who take the time to be involved in their university community and engage with their colleagues were more likely to complete their degrees. A McGill meta-analysis of graduate education showed just this. Take some time to be social and join us at the Owl. We will have staff members from Grad Studies and you are welcome to join us but you can also sit wherever you like.

We had free nachos at our last Grad Night and we hope to have them again at the next Grad Night on Wednesday, October 12 between 4:00 - 6:00 pm

Letter of Understanding Template for You and Your Supervisor

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research aspires to provide the highest quality of graduate student supervision experience at the University of Regina. Clarifying the graduate student supervisor relationship and aligning supervisor and graduate student expectations are key. Following national best practices, and U of R’s policies, the Letter of Understanding template aims to facilitate a conversation between supervisor and student that will help build a respectful and fruitful relationship of mutual benefit. It is highly recommended that students and supervisors review this at the beginning of the student’s program and adjust it as the graduate program progresses.
