Dear Colleagues:
Following an extensive national search, and after careful consideration of feedback from both faculty and staff, an offer was extended to and accepted by Dr. Karen Appleby to become the next Dean of the Graduate School at Idaho State University.
Dr. Appleby holds a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Sport Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She holds master's degrees in both Sport Psychology and Sport Management from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as well.
Dr. Appleby has enjoyed extensive experience in university administration, previously serving ISU as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Vice Provost for Faculty Success and Instruction, Interim Dean of the College of Education, Department Chair of Human Performance and Sports Studies, and Director and Faculty Co-Coordinator of the University Program for Instructional Effectiveness. She currently serves as the Coordinator of Faculty Development in the College of Education.
Dr. Appleby has been a deeply impactful member of Idaho State University’s faculty and leadership for many years. During her tenure at ISU, she has demonstrated a genuine commitment to the welfare of our students, our faculty, and our mission. Her previous experience will make her uniquely impactful in this new role, and we are extremely fortunate to have her serve as the next Dean of the Graduate School.
I would also like to take this opportunity to offer my heartfelt gratitude to Interim Dean Collum for leading the Graduate School during the last few years. Her service as Interim Dean has been marked by dedication, thoughtfulness, and a steadfast commitment to our students and faculty, and the Graduate School has greatly benefited from her exemplary stewardship during this period of transition. Interim Dean Collum will continue in her role until Dr. Appleby joins the Graduate School, after which she will resume her duties as Associate Dean of the Graduate School. Dr. Appleby will begin her formal appointment as Dean of the Graduate School on February 9, 2026.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the excellent work of our institutional search committee, led by Drs. Brumley and Chiu, as well as my gratitude for all who took time to attend candidate forums and provide valuable feedback.
