Last year, the Foundation for Tacoma Students launched advocacy efforts for the first time in coordination with the Graduate Tacoma community movement. This fall, we will launch the Graduate Tacoma Advocacy Network as our newest Collaborative Action Network.

Community Leader Spotlight:
Pamela Porter
Ms. Pam, as her students call her, has been a program specialist at the Boys and Girls Club BOTT lab since 2018. Building Opportunity Through Technology, or BOTT, houses 23 computers where students explore programs catered to math, reading, science, and language art.In this Q&A, Pamela shares the importance of community involvement, the need for positive role models, and how she encourages her own children to make a positive impact.
Youth Celebrate Apprenticeship Signing Day
Tacoma students joined nearly 100 newly registered youth apprentices from across the state to celebrate the beginning of their work with the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee . All youth apprentices during their program will receive 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training totaling up to $28,000, tuition free college classes, and valuable work experience—fast-tracking their careers in high-demand industries at the age of 16.
Students Recreate Apollo 11 Moon Landing with NASA Challenge
Students from fifth to 12th grades across Tacoma-Pierce County gathered to recreate the Apollo 11 moon landing for the Apollo Next Giant Leap Student Challenge, a national competition sponsored by NASA. The top two teams are heading to Seattle next week to compete against others in the state for the chance to win a trip to the Johnson Space Center in Houston this summer.
