Ask, Seek, and Knock
Pastor Ed Treat
Dear Graduates,

Congratulations! A significant journey is ending for you and a new one is about to begin as you move from being a child to an adult. On behalf of your parents (as a parent of a graduating child myself), you should know this is a big deal for us, too. Please know we are always here for you. We have always been and always will be.
You are receiving a lot of advice these days, so as your pastor, let me give you mine too. This road of life you’re gazing down will be filled with many ups and downs. It’s is going to get very hard at times. As you go, remember to ask God for everything.

The world tells you that you are the master of your fate and must fend for yourself. But God wants you to believe that you “cannot receive even one thing unless it is given [you] from heaven” (John 3:27), and that “apart from [Jesus] you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Jesus invites you to ask, seek, and knock.

My advice is, take Jesus at his word. Ask, seek, knock, pray for guidance each step of the way and he will make your path straight. In doing so, by asking for help and trusting in God, you will be as wise as anyone can ever be in this life.

Godspeed in the days ahead and grace be with you to the end.

Taking a Walk
and Remembering
Neighborhoods never stay the same for too long. On our street, so many houses either have changed hands, or there are now widows, staying put, but using professional help to plow snow or mow the lawn. Having lived here since 1964, I've walked a lot of long blocks, and can remember the very first time I ever ventured out to see if I could get someplace, for instance Pik Quik [convenience store similar to 7-Eleven] over on Old Shakopee Road.

That place is no longer there either, it's now Wagner's Garden Center...The old Pik Quik had the best ripe bananas for baking, so at least there was a destination in sight. Our young son was along for company....He's turning 60 next July!

From Russell Avenue to Xerxes is not far, but I still remember walking the six blocks to Judy Lindman's. We had a rehearsal for a sextet and Judy was our accompanist... excellent, by the way. Now she lives at Applewood, but I still think of her as I walk by her old house.... swimming pool in the back! I had several piano students from Xerxes, but have not kept track of where they went. TLC prays each Sunday for Jamie Lindman, who serves our country these days.

Several summers ago, the city of Bloomington was going to make Overlook Drive a through-road, taking away a lovely walking area that goes behind Dwan Golf Course up a hill and right in front of where Mary and Larry George lived for so long. People who live on Overlook got stubborn about this lovely road, and refused to allow any tampering. I even wrote a letter to the Bloomington Sun and while walking that road would get to talk with people, one of which was Sandy Stooke! Well, so far the one-lane road is intact. I suppose when enough of us old people are gone they'll try again to widen that road and make it go through the Dwan property until it reaches the other side. Is that progress? They'll say it is, but where can one see wild turkeys, foxes and golfers while enjoying peace and quiet?

James R. Anderson

Send a remembrance or anecdote for next week's TLC Weekly.
Email to:
Many of us have just returned home from Pastor Jim Anderson's lovely memorial service at Mt. Olivet. The church's main sanctuary was filled with the people who remember him with fondness. Eulogies told of Gustavus, his ministry, his family and friends, too much to write about here.

Perhaps you were there and would like to share a remembrance of his years at TLC [1968-1979], or some funny, related story.... There are many! I am asking for you to write your special story, or maybe your association with Jim Anderson, in a short paragraph which would be printed in our “Weekly” newsletter next week. If there are many of you writing, it could be extended to the week after that, but not any longer. If you were unable to attend his funeral, it would give you the chance to join with others and still tell your tales of Jim and his wonderful era at TLC.

CUT DOWN ON ENERGY USE
It's really easy to carelessly waste energy––leaving a light bulb on here and there, keeping the air conditioning on at home when you're out at work all day––but it all adds up. Try to cut down on your energy use by being conscious of how you use electronics. (Doing this will help you save on your electricity bill too, so win-win.) Some suggestions: Try swapping out your incandescent light bulbs for energy efficient LED bulbs (the prices have dropped significantly), only run the dishwasher and washing machine when they're full, and look out for "vampire" devices—electronics that keep using energy even when they're not in use, like microwaves, TVs, and printers.

ANSWERS FROM QUIZ EARLIER IN THIS ISSUE

1) The Bible books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are known as the gospels , (meaning "good news") of Jesus Christ. Almost everything we know about Jesus' life, ministry, death and resurrection comes from these four books. Which of the four books was the first one written?
Answer #2: Mark
The gospel message was preserved in oral form for many years before being written down. Bible scholars believe Mark was written around 70 A.D., about 40 years after Jesus was crucified. Matthew, Luke and Acts were written between 80 and 90 A.D. Finally, The Gospel of John appeared in its final form around 95 A.D.

2) The "kingdom of God" was the centerpiece of Jesus' teachings, but one of the gospels substitutes the phrase "kingdom of heaven." Which one?
Answer #1: Matthew
The "kingdom of God" and "kingdom of heaven" are used interchangeably in the Bible. It is uncertain why Matthew preferred "kingdom of heaven."

3) Which of these stories about Jesus is in all four gospels?
Answer #3: Jesus feeds 5000 with a few loaves of bread and fishes.

4) True or False? All four gospel books tell Jesus' parables of The Good Samaritan and The Prodigal Son .
Answer #2: False
Luke 10:29-37 , 15:11-32 . These two best-loved parables are only in Luke. The Good Samaritan calls us to love everyone in the world, even enemies. The Prodigal Son tells of God's great love and forgiveness for all His people, even the rebellious and disobedient.
