Reflections from the Rector

Why We Do What We Do

In a busy world, it can be easy to view church attendance as just another item on the weekly schedule. Yet gathering together reminds us that we are part of the body of Christ, united in love and purpose. Through prayer, worship, fellowship, and service, we strengthen one another and bear witness to God's presence among us.

This weekend we have several opportunities to do just that: To be the body of Christ, loving and supporting each other in our daily life.

FRIDAY: Over 90 of us will sit behind home plate at the Wilmington BlueRocks game! We'll sit with friends old and new, hope to see Mr Celery, and end the evening with fireworks!

SATURDAY MORNING: Three members of our parish will be Confirmed/Received into the Episcopal Church at 11:00 AM at the Chapel of the Atonement, Church Farm School (1006 Chapel Ln, Exton) and our choir will be part of a volunteer group singing an anthem. All are welcome!

SATURDAY EVENING: Join Rev Jill in the field for Faith by the Fire at 6pm. We'll worship Evening Prayer and spend time in fellowship.

SUNDAY MORNING: Bring a dessert or side dish to our Parish Picnic which follows our 9:30 worship. Show your St John's pride by wearing your yellow church t-shirt!

Speaking of worship, do you ever wonder why we do what we do on Sunday mornings? Our Eucharist will be an 'instructional one' as Rev Jill breaks down the actions and meaning behind our Sunday worship. Email a question for Rev Jill to answer during her Q&A sermon.

This Sunday, we'll also recognize our graduates: if you don't have a SJ t-shirt, wear your college colors proudly!

Each time we are together, we're reminded that God is at work in our lives and as we belong to God's family we also belong to one another. Together, may we grow in Christ and serve one another.

Blessings,

Rev Jill

Community & Diocese Information

(From Forward Day by Day) Reading the Bible is one of the best ways to grow spiritually, especially if you are able to join in the company of fellow travelers on the journey. The Good Book Club offers you a chance to join with others—whether locally in your church or globally online—in an immersive experience in a book of the Bible.

This year, the Good Book Club will be spending "A Summer with Paul." Paul’s letters significantly influenced the development of Christianity. Paul’s letters to various churches make up thirteen of the twenty-seven books in the New Testament.

In the months of June and July, we’ll read through three of these letters together:

  • 1 Corinthians
  • 2 Corinthians
  • Philippians

Weekly reflection emails and an online Bible study bring folks together to wrestle with - and be blessed by - the words of Paul. Join us today!

The diocese has created resources for churches and community members to understand their rights and protect vulnerable neighbors during times of immigration enforcement activity. Rooted in our shared faith and moral calling, these resources are offered to support peaceful protest and the protection of human dignity in the face of injustice. Resources available here.

The Episcopal Church has pulled together some resources for Protesting Faithfully: A Toolkit for Public Witness.
