BGCCF Update | June 30, 2020
For the 5th year in a row, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of our high school seniors graduated! That’s right! Across our Clubs, every one of our 91 seniors graduated! A full 88% of them have postsecondary education plans.

Our newly-minted Club alumni will attend the following colleges: Rollins College, University of Florida, Florida State University, FAMU, Valdosta State, University of Central Florida, Florida International University, Orange Technical College, Earlham College or Randolph College, Valencia College. More than $800,000 in scholarship and Pell grant assistance has been awarded to these students—totaling over $3.2 million over 4 years! No one is prouder than our own Suzanne Dukes, College Access Consultant, who works with our students while they’re in high school to research colleges, apply for admission and financial aid, and to help connect them with scholarship opportunities.

“It’s such an honor and a privilege to be a part of these teens’ lives, and to help them achieve their educational goals,” said Dukes.

Tasha Robinson-Banks, Senior Service Director of our Levy-Hughes Clubhouse, couldn’t stand the fact that graduation ceremonies across the region had been canceled due to COVID, so she took matters into her own hands. On Juneteenth, the Club hosted its own private graduation celebration for its 9 seniors, at the historic Wells’Built Museum in Parramore.

“Our graduates have worked so hard, and overcome so many obstacles in order to achieve this milestone,” said Robinson-Banks. “They deserved to mark the occasion in a truly special way.”

We’re happy to share that our Clubs have re-opened for summer service! Indeed, we have strict new protocols in place to minimize COVID risk – including temperature checks, wearing masks while indoors, smaller groups (no more than 9 children per staff), frequent disinfecting, and social distancing—but the children and staff couldn’t be happier to be back together again, in spite of these measures.
And it turns out, the sky’s the limit on what activities you can do with kids, even socially-distanced ones! Our Levy-Hughes Clubhouse had a carnival! Our Spring Creek Club members are becoming sidewalk Piccassos! Our Walt Disney World Clubhouse children researched and created colorful posters to celebrate Juneteenth. And our East Altamonte members are even making up for lost time with an Easter Egg hunt—in June! It’s our good fortune to have extremely creative Club staff who make learning fun even in the most challenging conditions.

We hope you enjoy these photos of the great activities taking place in our Clubs this summer!
