A Message From Your Chamber President
McIlnay Button Law, LLC
Dear Chamber Members,
Some of you have probably wondered throughout the year about the song lyrics and how it got started. It was actually during a staff meeting and one of the staff asked me what had happened with a former female client. This staff member had thought we might become an item. Without thinking, I recited the following for a Bob Dylan song, Tangled up in Blue:
She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam I guess
But I used a little too much force
Surprisingly, my partner was amused, so I started to quote lyrics more often, usually just one line.
Then I got an iPod touch and learned that I could read the lyrics to my favorite songs and it just became a thing. As I went along, I was intrigued by the depth and breath of the language skills of the lyricists. Then in 2016, Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and I really got interested because apparently sane, sober and intelligent people took his lyrics seriously.
This brings me to this month's selection. It is two different versions of the same stanzas of Tangled up in Blue. I'm not certain how much time passed between the writing of these verses (you can Google it), but the first was the original commercial success. The moral is that even a great writer is never satisfied with even their commercial successes and want to tinker.
I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the cafés at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on
Like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue
He was always in a hurry
Too busy or too stoned
And everything that she ever planned
Just had to be postponed
He thought they were successful
She thought they were blessed
With objects and material things
But I never was impressed
And when it all came crashin' down
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was keep on keepin' on
like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue
The first version evokes memories of the sixty's when "revolution was in the air." I'm not sure, but in the latter version Bob could have been writing to that same revolutionary generation who, despite their idealism, ultimately became impressed with objects and material things. Perhaps we always were. Some serious introspection may be necessary.
