Matt’s Journey to Belonging
At just 7 years old, Matt experienced childhood trauma that left deep emotional scars. Born without eyes and legally blind, Matt faced a world that often overlooked both his potential and his pain. Now 30, he made a courageous decision—he wanted to try something new. Something bold. He wanted to attend overnight camp.
But Matt was scared. Really scared. The thought of being in a new environment, surrounded by strangers, felt overwhelming. Still, something about Trailway Camps called to him.
Our team embraced Matt’s hopes—and his fears. We worked closely with him to understand every detail of his needs, creating a safe, welcoming space where he could truly feel seen. In November 2024, Matt arrived at camp, heart pounding but determined to take a step toward healing.
By the end of the week, he had done more than just attend—he had flourished. He made friends. He laughed—hard. He sang at the talent show. And most importantly, Matt rediscovered something he had nearly lost: the belief that good people still exist, and that he belongs.
When April 2025 arrived, we invited Matt back—not just as a camper, but as a guest of honor. Before an audience of 300 at our Decade Celebration Camper Reunion, Matt took the stage and performed his talent show act, receiving a standing ovation and a few tears.
Trailway didn’t just give Matt a camp experience. We gave him a memory to last a lifetime—and a community that believes in him.
