Happy Holidays, We're Done With Harvest!

Written by Winemaker, Ed Seikel

Happy holidays! It's especially happy for us in the cellar because harvest is now officially over! It was by far our latest here at GIV, with everything almost a month behind previous years.

The main concern we had as it became apparent that this harvest was going to be significantly later was whether the grapes would have enough time to ripen before the cold and rain began. Fortunately, the grapes ripened to a point that David and I were happy with, all the wines fermented well, and the reds completed their secondary fermentation quickly. In the end, I think we have everything barreled down and aging at just about the same time as previous years, despite getting a later start.

And thanks to everyone that came out to see us for the barrel tasting event in the cellar! We always have so much fun when we get to meet and chat with everyone and get to show off new wines we are excited about. Mixed into the barrel tasting was a literal barrel tasting, where we tried the exact same wine that had been aged in new French oak, American oak, and Hungarian oak barrels, and we had everyone vote on which was their favorite. To our surprise, the French oak finished last in the vote, and the winner was the Hungarian oak! We might need to add more Hungarian oak to our barrel program!

Grand Island Vineyards 2019 After Dark

Written by Winemaker, David Shattuck

Before I talk about our featured wine, I wanted to say happy holidays from the winemaking team. We really enjoyed spending time with everyone who participated in one of the tours at the winery during harvest. In particular, thank you for spending time with Ed and I in the vineyard, the barrel room, and crush pad. I hope everyone enjoyed some new wines, learned a little bit, and saw how an estate winery functions.

For the holidays, we are revisiting one of the most versatile wines that we produce at Grand Island Vineyards. The 2019 After Dark is made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the estate vineyard and fortified with neutral grape spirits during fermentation. The fermentation finished with a light residual sugar and sat on skins for the next 7 months in an open bin. This technique allowed this wine to gain an impressive complexity. I use this wine as a pre-dinner aperitif, a pairing with dessert, or a cocktail component. In particular, this wine works very well with cheese or milk chocolate desserts.

This wine pours a beautiful brick red with a hint of orange in the meniscus. The initial notes are grape pomace, cacao nib, and jasmine. This moderately sweet wine demonstrates a firm tannin profile and zippy acidity that flow into a clean finish. The wine lingers on the palate with notes of cedar, dried fig, and lavender.

Here is one way I use this wine as the base of a great pre-dinner cocktail. This cocktail provides a hint of herbal note with juicy fruit and a delightful bittersweet finish.

Harvest Finished in November, Halleluiah!

Written by Operations Manager, Joe Salman

Mother nature blessed us with a long mild harvest that allowed us to finish in early November.

The wrap of harvest was about 3 weeks later in 2023 versus 2022 and I'm very happy with the quality of fruit, so this looks to be a very good year.

The vines now are making their way to sleep (just like me). The now crinkly, leaved vines are descending into dormancy and showing off some of their pretty fall colors. Orange, Red and Brown, with just a slight smidge of green mixed in, surrounds the winery now.

Fall work consisted of us planting some cover crops between the rows and then mostly standard fixings and cleanings of equipment that we used during Harvest. Now that things have slowed way down, it's finally time to enjoy the holidays with family, and friends and excellent wine. We invite you to come join us, either to say hello, have a glass, get a bottle or just wander the property. We'd love to see you and wish you a blessed holiday season.

Cheers,

Joe
