Grand Isle 2025 Fall Newsletter

Grand Isle Heading into the Fall

Dear Friends,

We have had a terrific summer filled with great events, including fishing rodeos like the Swollfest, Tarpon Rodeo and Ride the Bull, as well as a fantastic music festival that raised funds for important community projects in Grand Isle. We still have more exciting events coming up so check out our full list of fall events at townofgrandisle.com/events.

We’re proud to share that Grand Isle was named the Best Town in Louisiana by Louisiana Life Magazine! We are extremely proud of this recognition and grateful to everyone in our community, as well as supporters across the state who voted for us.

We’ve also added a new page to our website highlighting infrastructure projects that have been completed and are underway in our community—from playgrounds to levees and road work. Recent accomplishments include the completed Dune & Beach Restoration, so important for protecting our island, and the new Cheniere Caminada Playground and Baseball Fields. We have come so far since Hurricane Ida, and we’re going to keep going strong! Check it out at: Making Progress.

A special shout-out goes to the Grand Isle Garden Club, which is looking to purchase some new equipment to continue beautifying our community. Your dedication makes a real difference! Donate here

We are thrilled that our beloved Oleander Hotel has officially been named a historic landmark! This milestone brings us closer to raising the final $100,000 needed to purchase the hotel and begin its restoration. Learn more and support the project here: restoregrandisle.com/oleander-hotel.

We’re also excited to announce the installation of two new historical markers commemorating the Cheniere Caminada Hurricane of 1893.These two new markers join the marker for the town that the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission installed this past spring, creating a growing network of sites that celebrate Grand Isle’s rich history.

As always, we welcome you to our island. Plan your visit at www.townofgrandisle.com or contact our Tourism Director, Louise LaFont, at 985-786-3196. Louise is happy to greet you at the new tourism office located at Town Hall, 170 Ludwig Lane.

Warm regards,

Mayor David Camardelle

Grand Isle Named Best Town in Louisiana!

This spring, readers of Louisiana Life Magazine voted Grand Isle the Best Town in the state, rising above more than 130 other communities across Louisiana!

On July 23, a formal declaration was presented to Mayor David Camardelle, the Grand Isle Town Council, and the Jefferson Parish Council. Mayor Camardelle extended a heartfelt thank you to the community and friends across the state for their support: “This honor belongs to all of us,” he said.

You can look forward to a full feature on Grand Isle in the September 2025 issue of Louisiana Life Magazine. In the meantime, check out the online article here: https://www.louisianalife.com/grand-isle-wins-louisiana-lifes-best-town-award/

New Historical Markers Installed in Grand Isle!

We’re excited to announce the installation of two new historical markers commemorating the Cheniere Caminada Hurricane of 1893.

📍 Locations along Highway 1:

• One marks the historic Caminada Cemetery

• The other highlights the turnoff to the Historic Church Bell site

These two new markers join the new marker for the town that the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission installed this past spring, creating a growing network of sites that celebrate Grand Isle’s history.

A heartfelt thank you to the Jefferson Parish Historical Commission for making this possible, including sponsoring a replacement for the marker lost during Hurricane Ida.

Let’s continue to celebrate and preserve the rich history that makes Grand Isle so special!

A Historic Win for Grand Isle!

The Oleander Hotel Earns Spot on National Register of Historic Places

The Oleander Hotel—a two-story landmark that has weathered nearly a century of storms on Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island—has officially been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

This designation marks a major milestone in the campaign to preserve and restore one of Grand Isle’s last historic hotels.

A Rare Piece of Louisiana’s Coastal Heritage

On July 25, the Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation confirmed the Oleander’s listing, recognizing it as a rare example of Louisiana Coastal Vernacular architecture—a style that has nearly vanished from the island due to repeated hurricanes and modern development.

“This is a huge step forward in our effort to restore the Oleander Hotel as a visitor and cultural center,” said Mayor David Camardelle. “We’re so grateful to everyone who has supported this project—from community members to major donors—and especially thankful to Allyson Hinz, who worked closely with Restore Grand Isle to prepare the nomination.”

History of the Oleander Hotel

  • Opened in April 1929 by Grand Isle resident John Ludwig.
  • Local legend says Governor Huey P. Long promised Ludwig: “If you build a hotel, I will build a road.”
  • Just two years later, Louisiana Highway 1 connected Grand Isle to the mainland.
  • Operated for decades before closing in the 1990s.
  • Today, it stands as the sole surviving historic hotel from Grand Isle’s early resort era.

The Restoration Effort

Restore Grand Isle, the nonprofit leading the project, plans to transform the Oleander into a:

✔️ Visitor center

✔️ Museum

✔️ Community space celebrating Grand Isle’s culture and resilience

So far, $293,000 has been raised toward the $400,000 goal—leaving just $107,000 to go before renovations can begin.

“Being listed on the National Register brings national recognition and opens doors for state and federal support,” said Ronnie Sampey, executive director of Restore Grand Isle. “This project will be a major boost for the island and help us preserve a symbol of Louisiana history, architecture, and coastal resilience for future generations.”
