Every day, we appreciate the work our associates are doing in each of our Granger locations. But at a few different times during the year, we make a special effort to show our associates just how much their work means to all of us and to our company.

Each June, we celebrate Waste & Recycling Workers Week. This year, we're celebrating our country's independence a couple weeks early with an All-American BBQ for all our waste and recycling workers. Here's what you can expect.

And speaking of candidates for driver and mechanic positions, we're holding an event just for them. Details are as follows:

Career Expo for Drivers and Mechanics

Encouraging your contacts to come out to this event could be a great way to get that referral bonus if they are successful in their application.

The following openings do not qualify for the 5 for 5 incentive, but they do qualify for our standard referral program. You can earn up to $1,000 for each qualified candidate you refer who is hired. As a reminder, you will receive $250 after the new associate is here 90 days and $250 for each of three additional 90-day periods, as long as the associate you referred stays at Granger.

Employee Assistance
One tool Granger provides to help you and your family members through difficult situations is an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) called HelpNet. You and your family members can contact HelpNet, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at 800-969-6162. Here's how it works:
  • HelpNet will schedule an appointment for you or your family member with a local provider within 72 business hours. (If you have an emergency situation, HelpNet can put you in touch with a counselor immediately.)
  • Your counselor will develop a plan for the issues that need to be resolved. A few brief sessions are offered to you free of charge.
  • If you require more counseling, HelpNet will assist you with finding an affordable professional to continue your treatment. They’ll also explain your health benefits, including what is covered and what expenses you could incur.

HelpNet strictly adheres to all state and federal guidelines and regulations for patient confidentiality. HelpNet provides statistics to employers, but no name or diagnosis is given without written permission from the patient.

The HelpNet website offers a variety of helpful tools, including resources for creating a personal budget and designing your will free of charge. HelpNet's video training channel contains webinars on subjects like the power of positivity, coping with change and stress management. Visit www.helpneteap.com to

Special Request
A few weeks ago, we received an unusual request from a customer:

We have a wonderful secretary named Cindy Brushaber. She is a sweet, hilarious woman who just celebrated her 55th birthday. These last few months she has become known for her weekly Wednesday greeting which goes something like, “It’s Wednesday, which means it garbage day! It’s going to be a great day! Did you set out your garbage this morning?” For her birthday she received lots of garbage day related gifts and absolutely loved it.

I am reaching out to see if it would be possible for one of your drivers to visit her on a pickup day before the end of the school year (June 10)? I thought she would get such a kick if the truck pulled up and the driver could deliver some flowers.

We arranged to have RJ Rubie make a short visit with Cindy, bring her some flowers and a gift pack of Granger swag on a day that he was already servicing the area around the school where she works. Needless to say, Cindy was surprised and thrilled. She had this to say about the experience:

Oh my, This was the best day ever! The surprise visit from all of you, the flowers and the Granger goodies (especially the hat signed by RJ) were amazing! A day I will never forget!

Thank you for taking the time for the smiles and laughs!

Check out the sign in the background!

Fowlerville Spruces Up
Our Fowlerville associates are getting some care in the form of a refresher/remodeling of their workspaces. The customer service crew recently got new desks, as seen here. There is also some remodeling happening with Fowlerville's operations building. Stay tuned for photos in an upcoming issue!
Recreational Water Safety
Water offers the most common way to beat the heat, and swimming is one of the most popular ways to do so. From backyard pools to local lakes and beaches, there are many places to swim, play or relax; however, water can pose safety issues for families. According to the U.S. Lifesaving Association, more than 100 drownings occur every year in the United States due to rip currents in the ocean. In fact, the USA Swimming Foundation reports an average of 19 children drown every year during the Fourth of July holiday.

In addition to taking swimming lessons, learning CPR and maintaining a close watch on those in or around the water, particularly children, keep these things in mind:

  • Swim in supervised areas. Don't go in the water unless you know how to swim. If you or your children cannot, take swimming lessons beforehand or enter the water only where there is trained supervision.
  • Stay calm in a rip current. Swimmers who get caught in a rip current are urged not to try to fight it. Stay calm and float with it or try to swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current and can swim freely.
  • Keep rescue equipment nearby. Make sure there are life jackets, ring buoys and other rescue equipment near the body of water. A first aid kit should be available, too.
  • Swim in safe areas. Dive only in areas that are known to be safe, such as the deep end of a supervised pool or lake. Avoid jumping in headfirst.
  • No horseplay. Do not push, shove, dunk or indulge in horseplay around the swimming pool, because this can lead to falls, accidental injuries or death.
  • Avoid alcohol. Never drink alcohol before going into or being in the water. It can impair reflexes, vision and judgment.

Inspirational Thoughts from Ron Granger
Kudos
I called today to give kudos to the workers. They do a great job and I can’t complain. I also loved how quick you were to switch out my cart for me.

—A customer speaking about Rob Weitz and Mike Olger

For whatever reason my pick up was missed on Tuesday. I had a chat with someone who was able to arrange a pick up on Thursday for me. I wasn't going to put the cart to the curb until 7 a.m. However, they came before 7 a.m. Whomever the driver was, he made the extra effort of getting the cart from the side of my house. Thank you to them for doing that and not just driving by when I didn't have it out early enough. Thank you to the rep who arranged the pick up as well!
