Dear Associate,

Happy Thursday!

In this issue, you can recognize your fellow associates who are veterans, learn about the serious issue of drowsy driving and find out what important piece of equipment was just installed in Jackson. You can also read about the latest certification in the landfill and find important reminders.

Thanks for reading, stay safe out there and make today a great Granger day!

New Scale in Jackson
After several months without one, we finally have a new scale at the Disposal Center of Jackson. The scale was broken and there were delays with getting a new one due to COVID. Shout out to our Jackson associates who went above and beyond to service our customers during this time using a less than ideal setup.
Thank You, Veterans!
Veterans Day is November 11. Let's take this opportunity to recognize the following Granger associates for their service.

Landfill Cap Certified
Congratulations to the landfill and engineering staff on a job well done! We found out earlier this month that our latest landfill capping project, a 4.6-acre cap which was started in 2019 and finished this summer, was certified by the State of Michigan. A cap is installed in an area of the landfill that is considered full and that will no longer be available to accept trash. Landfill caps consist of several layers of materials and soil that form a protective barrier between landfill contents and the area outside the landfill.
Drowsy Driving Prevention Week
November 1 - 8
Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, Nov. 1-8, 2020, is a good time to remember that drowsy driving is impaired driving.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, about half of U.S. adult drivers admit to consistently getting behind the wheel while feeling drowsy. About 20% admit to falling asleep behind the wheel at some point in the past year, with more than 40% admitting this has happened at least once in their driving careers.

These startling figures show how prevalent drowsy driving is. What drivers may not realize is how much drowsy driving puts them and others at risk. In fact, an estimated 5,000 people died in 2015 in crashes involving drowsy driving, according to a Governors Highway Safety Association report.

Driving while drowsy is similar to driving under influence of alcohol. Consider these important points:

  • Drivers’ reaction times, awareness of hazards and ability to sustain attention all worsen when a driver is drowsy.
  • Driving after going more than 20 hours without sleep is the equivalent of driving with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08% (the U.S. legal limit).
  • You are three times more likely to be in a car crash if you are fatigued.

A driver might not even know when he or she is fatigued because signs of fatigue are hard to identify. Some people may also experience micro-sleep (short, involuntary periods of inattention). In the four or five seconds a driver experiences micro-sleep, at highway speed, the vehicle will travel the length of a football field.
The following are signs and symptoms of drowsy driving, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine:

  • Frequent yawning or difficulty keeping your eyes open
  • "Nodding off" or having trouble keeping your head up
  • Inability to remember driving the last few miles
  • Missing road signs or turns
  • Difficulty maintaining your speed
  • Drifting out of your lane
Unfit to Drive?
According to the National Sleep Foundation Drowsy Driving Consensus Panel 2016, you are unfit to drive if you have slept two or fewer hours in the past 24 hours.
Whether you're driving to or from work, running errands or if you're one of our driving associates who drives all day, please be sure you're getting enough sleep before you get behind the wheel. As you can see from the statistics in this article, driving while drowsy impairs you much more than you would think.
Did You Move in 2020?
If your address changed this year, make sure to update the information with HR. For a number of reasons, it's very important that HR has your correct mailing address, especially as we get closer to sending out W-2 forms.
