Neighbors Helping Neighbors Since 1850

Dear Wheeling Township residents,

As September begins, Wheeling Township is focused on helping residents stay informed and connected.

This month, we encourage you to take advantage of several educational opportunities, including our virtual presentation, Help, Hope & Recovery: Supporting Mental Health in the Township, on Wednesday, September 16, and an in-person program on Alzheimer's and Dementia on Friday, September 18. On Friday, September 25, residents can also join a Zoom presentation on the importance of reviewing Medicare Drug and Advantage Plans ahead of Medicare Open Enrollment, which begins Thursday, October 15.

We also want to remind residents that property tax bills are due October 1. As always, Wheeling Township is here to provide resources, information, and support for residents of all ages and stages of life.

Most importantly, thank you for the trust you place in us, for supporting one another, and for helping make our community a place where neighbors truly help neighbors.

With gratitude and commitment,

Maria Zeller Brauer

Wheeling Township Supervisor

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September marks both National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and National Recovery Month, providing an important opportunity to raise awareness about mental health, recovery and the resources available to those in need of them.

In recognition of these observances, the Wheeling Township Community Mental Health Board (WTCMHB), in partnership with the Township’s Senior & Disability Services Department, will host a free Zoom webinar, Help, Hope & Recovery: Supporting Mental Health in Wheeling Township, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16. The presentation will explore ways to foster hope, access support and encourage recovery. To register, call 847-259-7730.

The WTCMHB also supports local organizations that provide mental health, substance use, and intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD) services. Learn more about available resources here.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Medicare Open Enrollment Appointments

Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15, and Wheeling Township seniors can get a head start by scheduling an appointment with a SHIP (Senior Health Insurance Program) counselor. Counselors can help review Medicare Part D prescription drug plans and Part C Medicare Advantage plans, making it easier to understand available options and select coverage that best meets individual needs. Appointments fill quickly, so seniors are encouraged to call 847-259-7730 today to schedule a convenient appointment time.

Seniors can also learn more during a Zoom presentation at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 25, which will explain why it is important to review Medicare drug and Medicare Advantage plans each year. To register or learn more, send an email.

Meaning Behind your

Tax Bill

According to Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, “Local governments across Cook County are seeking $743.8 million in NEW taxes, bringing the total amount property owners must pay to more than $19.9 billion, an increase of about 3.9% - well above the annual regional inflation of 3.1%”

The median homeowner in the northern triennial saw their tax bill increase by 6.7%. In Wheeling Township, the tax burden on residential properties climbed to 73% due to vacancies and reductions in commercial property assessments. Stay connected with Wheeling Township on social media for a deeper look at what these results mean. The Township Assessor will also share additional insights and information in an upcoming communication.

Understanding Alzheimer's And Dementia

Learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia during a free, in-person presentation at Wheeling Township at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 18. This informative program will help participants better understand the differences between Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, while exploring the stages of Alzheimer’s and key factors that may increase an individual’s risk. Attendees will also learn about the latest research developments and FDA-approved treatments currently available to help manage the disease. To learn more or register, send an email.
