The University of Maryland is working to educate county and state officials about agriculture in Maryland.
In 2019, two meetings on the Eastern Shore reached 50 officials. Attendees were provided information on common poultry and grain production practices, current legal issues that farmers face, and new practices farmer may adopt in the near future. From these workshops, 37% of officials increased their knowledge on nutrient application, 25% increased their knowledge of aerial application, and 54% of attendees increased their knowledge about tillage.
To continue these educational opportunities, a 2020 grant of $5,937 was provided. The goal of the grant was to utilize three workshops on the Western Shore to cover grain, dairy, and the poultry industry while covering basic legal issues impacting Maryland agricultural producers.
