Meaningful Summer Jobs for Today’s Young Adults
|
By David Berkey, Executive Director, Michigan Area United Methodist Camping
As you drive around the state you likely see “Help Wanted” signs everywhere you go. I would venture to say that just about anyone who wants a job these days could find one. Yet many do not offer a living wage, ideal working conditions, or meaningful things to do.
Enter the summer camp season 2022! Camps offer amazing opportunities for meaningful work outdoors and in community with peers. Yet, for some reason Michigan Area United Methodist Camping and many other camp organizations still struggle to find staff – and summer is coming soon!
Gen Z, those who are teens through age 25 and the typical age-group for summer camp staff, face life challenges unseen by previous generations. They missed many opportunities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have had to do school and college at home online. They report bouts of depression, anxiety or hopelessness. They have to make courageous, difficult decisions about how to spend their summers, build a resume and maintain and build relationships among their family and friends.
Good news! Working at summer camp is greatly suited to the needs of young people today and may help them recapture some of the social and work experiences lost during the pandemic. Keep reading

Program Manager Appointed to Lake Huron Retreat Center, Grant Helps Fund New Position
|
Lake Huron Retreat Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Rev. Cora Glass as Program and Hospitality Manager, beginning May 1. With this newly expanded position, the retreat center will broaden its programming with an emphasis on spiritual growth, rest and renewal for clergy and laity.
“Cora brings a passion for retreat ministry and a vision for developing new programs to our already strong ministry,” said Rev. Ann Emerson, Site Director. Both Rev. Emerson and Rev. Glass are ordained deacons in the Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church. “The Lord has opened a door for us to move our ministry forward in exciting ways. We are thrilled to welcome her to the Lake Huron team,” Rev. Emerson said.
“I’m looking forward to planning new retreat experiences that help guests connect with God in fun and meaningful ways,” Rev. Glass said. “I am excited to welcome guests to Lake Huron Retreat Center and grow this ministry in creative ways.” Keep reading

Staff, Volunteers Make Way for New Carpeting
|
We're grateful for this terrific crew who, in about two hours, broke down and moved furniture from the south end of Littleton Lodge. Their efforts allowed for the installation of new carpet in seven guest rooms! Next in line are the north end rooms.
