Activities Planned at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
  
50th Anniversary Celebration, Saturday August 17, 2019, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm (Fee Free!)
Take part in a ceremony with keynote speakers, elected officials, and panel guests including people who lived here, people who fought to make a Monument, and people who worked here. Enjoy refreshments and community.

Coffee and Cake with a Park Ranger, Tuesday August 20, 2019 10:00 am - 3:00 pm (Fee Free!)
Grab a cup of coffee or tea and a piece of 50th Anniversary cake and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the bill that made Florissant Fossil Beds a National Monument. Throughout the day, a variety of rangers, interns, volunteers, and former staff will be serving up coffee, tea, and cake. This drop in opportunity offers a chance to learn about the different people and jobs that are involved in operating Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. You will also have an opportunity to sign the 50th Anniversary Card.

Night Sky ProgramFriday, August 23, 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm.
 
Join park staff and members of the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society to gaze at the dark skies above Florissant Fossil Beds in search of planets, galaxies, nebulas, and more. Meet at the visitor center.

Yoga Hikes , Mondays, 9:15 am - 10:30 pm. Join a certified yoga instructor and a Park Ranger for a 1 hour and 30 minutes, 1 mile yoga hike. This will be a hike interspersed with standing yoga poses. This program is geared for beginner to intermediate yoga enthusiasts.  Meet at the visitor center.

Fossil Demonstration Excavation Site,
Wednesdays, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.  Meet geologist, Dr. Bob Carnein at the demonstration excavation site and see the fossil beds in situ and learn about how excavations are conducted. This site is located off the Petrified Forest Loop approximately 1 mile round trip from the visitor center.

Art in the Parks,
Thursdays, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.  Everyone is an artist! Drop in and join volunteer artists and other visitors to sketch and/or water color paint scenes of Florissant Fossil Beds.  Stay as long or as short as you would like anytime between 11 AM - 1:00 PM.

UPHS' 2020 Pictorial Calendars Available NOW

Ute Pass Historical Society has a limited number of 2020 14-month calendars available for sale for $12 each. The calendars are a Green Mountain Falls edition and a Ute Pass Edition (mostly trains!).
 
The gift shop is located at 231 E. Henrietta Avenue, next to the Woodland Park Library. Gift shop hours are 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Wednesday through Saturday, year-round.

Be sure to attend St. David of the Hills Episcopal Church on Sunday, August 25 , when our new Bishop, Reverend Kym Lucas, will be at Saint David's to celebrate the Eucharist with us! Service begins at 9:30 a.m.
 
This is a special occasion and we'll want to have EVERYONE here to welcome her!  And of course, we'll have a potluck afterwards, please see sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall.

Thirteen musicians will perform a work entitled "Tyrannosaurus  
Sue" by renown composer Bruce Adolphe. The music will follow the life of Sue on her journey searching for food, chasing a Parasaurolphus and battling a Triceratops . This will all be with narration. They will also play a few short arrangements from "Jurassic World". This will be a program that combines classical music and dinosaur history. They will also have a "Petting Zoo" which lets the children try many different instruments after the performance of the chamber orchestra.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is working on a resurfacing overlay project along US 24, from 8th Street to west of Manitou Springs (mile marker 296 to 304).
 
Pavement milling and resurfacing on the roadway will improve safety as it provides motorists a smoother road surface by eliminating ruts and road damage. US 24 West was last paved in 2004.

ln addition to pavement milling and resurfacing, the project also includes bridge rehabilitation on at least four structures, bridge rail replacement, and intersection enhancement at US 24 and 21st Street. Bridge scour protection at the US 24 Fountain Creek bridge and added westbound turn lane capacity are additional features to these improvements to US 24.
   
Day work for the week of August 18 :
  • Sunday, August 18 - Saturday, August 24, daily, 5 a.m. - 8 p.m., right turn lane restrictions at US 24 and 21st Street, eastbound and westbound for intersection re-building
  • Two through lanes in each direction, eastbound and westbound will be maintained open
Overnight work for the week of August 18 at the Intersection of US 24 and 21st Street:
  • Sunday, August 18 through Thursday, August 22, overnight, 8 p.m. - 5 a.m., eastbound and westbound, alternating single lane closures at mile marker 302.00
  • One lane each direction will be maintained open in the work zone
  • Work is for intersection rebuilding
Overnight work for the week of August 18, US 24 from El Paso Boulevard bridge to the west end of the project:
  • Sunday, August 18, through Thursday, August 22, overnight, 7 p.m. - 5 a.m., the bridge at El Paso Boulevard CLOSED at US 24, eastbound and westbound at mile marker 296.00 - 300.00.  
  • Detour in place MAP and DETOUR
  • Work includes milling, paving and bridge deck rehabilitation
Ongoing Restrictions :
  • Lane widths to 10 feet at 21st Street and US 24, both eastbound and westbound for intersection re-configuration
  • Speed reductions to 45 mph in active project work zones
