Activities Planned at Florissant Fossil Beds in March

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is open year-round. During March, the Monument is open daily 9:00 am - 4:30 pm (starting March 10, closing time will be 5:00 pm)

Friday, March 8, Night Sky Program, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
.
Join park staff and members of the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society to gaze at the dark skies above Florissant Fossil Beds in search of planets, galaxies, nebulas, and more. Meet at the visitor center.

Saturday, March 16, Winter Track Detectives! 11:00 am - 12:30 pm.
Join an interpretive park ranger for a guided hike (up to 2 miles) to discover the clues left behind by the Monument's wildlife.  As a track detective, you might encounter tracks, scat, feathers, rubs, burrows, and much more left behind by birds, coyotes, elk, and badgers or perhaps even see some of the wildlife in person.  Dress in layers and be ready to walk on uneven ground and possibly snow. Meet at the visitor center.

There are no additional fees for any park programs beyond the daily entrance fee of $10.00 per adult (15 and younger are free). Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument offers 15 miles of beautiful, yet lesser known, hiking trails to explore, a free Junior Ranger Program, three short self-guided trails, a park video and museum exhibits, and bookstore.  For additional information, please call 719.748.3253 or visit our website.

US 24 ITS Fiber Optic, Between Woodland Park and Colorado Springs (anticipated to be complete Fall, 2019)

The US 24 ITS project is a fiber optic installation project, taking place between the City of Woodland Park and Interstate-25/Cimarron Street in Colorado Springs (17 miles). The project is designed to maximize the operational efficiency and management of the existing roadway infrastructure through the use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and devices. The fiber optics project is part of CDOT's Smart Mobility Plan, a 5-10 year plan for statewide technology deployment.

Work will generally take place outside the pavement area or in the shoulder area. In that instance, work may take place Mondays through Fridays. When work is scheduled overnight in areas where work outside the travel lanes is not possible, the outside edge of the travel lane pavement may be impacted.

Overnight work for the week of March 4 happens along US 24 at 21st Street, 26th Street, and 31st Street.
*    Monday, March 4 through Friday, March 8, overnight, 7:00 p.m. - 5:00 a.m. (mile marker 302.10, 301.50 and 300.60)
*    Work consists of erosion control, directional boring and potholing for utilities.
*    Eastbound traffic can expect right shoulder closures and, right lane closures as needed

  • Westbound motorists planning to access the Pikes Peak Highway to the summit of Pikes Peak should anticipate the left turn at Fountain Avenue and safely move to the left lane well in advance of the intersection. This will minimize traffic backups that occur with last minute crossing over to make the left turn onto Fountain Avenue.
  • When exiting the Pikes Peak Highway on Fountain Avenue and heading eastbound on US 24 toward Colorado Springs, use the right turn merge lane onto the Ute Pass Avenue (frontage road) prior to the intersection.
  • Avoid distractions and pay attention to road and directional signs.
