Let us pray for all those in the path of Hurricane Florence.
Episcopal Relief & Development responds to storms in the United States and U.S. territories through their U.S. Disaster Program. Through partnerships with Episcopal dioceses, they offer resources and training to help people prepare for disasters and provide emergency support so vulnerable people can make a sustained recovery after the storm. The benefit of partnership with Episcopal churches is that these congregations are already deeply integrated within their communities. In other words, the Episcopal Church is there before responders arrive and will remain long after the news cameras have gone.

Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Sept 14
Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he might draw the whole world to himself: Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have grace to take up our cross and follow him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Include Gun Violence in Emergency Plans
The Church Pension Group's Safety & Insurance Handbook for Churches, addresses what to do in an emergency involving gun violence.
Quick communication and notification are key, the handbook emphasizes. And depending on church needs and budget, leaders can implement or update their regular security measures to incorporate newer technology, such as buzzed-in entry, automated locking, camera systems and key access.

Diocesan Pilgrimages
Save the Date
Pilgrimage to the Holy Land with the Bishop
18 February-4 March 2019
The Bishop hopes to establish a schedule of diocesan-wide pilgrimages to various pilgrimage destinations that will take place every 12-18 months. Such diocesan pilgrimages are wonderful ways to deepen our community as well as our individual lives of faith and commitment.
The Bishop will lead these pilgrimages along with another experienced pilgrimage leader.
For the Holy Land we shall be joined by Bishop Michael Turnbull, the former Bishop of Durham, who has led many pilgrimages to the Holy Land and around the landscape of sacred Britain. We shall also have an expert local guide. The pilgrimages will be open to clergy as well as laity.
The first pilgrimage will be to the Holy Land, the birthplace of our Christian faith and life. This pilgrimage will be unique, for we shall stay in Christian-owned and run guesthouses and hotels, and we shall have in-depth encounters with Christians, Jews, and Muslims who are committed to a just and peaceful future in the Holy Land. We shall come face to face with both the great challenges that face the region, as well as the inspiring hope that our sisters and brothers who live there.
In addition to a complete pilgrimage to the holy sites that are connected to the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord, we shall have an optional trip extension to Jordan and to the extraordinary ancient sites in that country, which include both Christian and other sites.
The dates for the first diocesan pilgrimage are the two weeks of 18 February-4 March 2019.
If you are interested in accompanying the Bishop on this life-changing pilgrimage, please let Monique know at
monique@diosef.org and you will be put on the list to receive more information when it is available.

Music at Saint Paul's Presents:
"Chopin and the Americans," with the Delray String Quartet and Pianist Jure Rozman
Sunday, September 16, 2018, 3:00 PM (
2:30 PM pre-concert conversation with Dr. Paul Cienniwa)
$20 suggested donation / 18 and under FREE
On
Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 3pm, Music at Saint Paul's continues its 31st Season with a concert titled, "Chopin and the Americans." Joined by pianist Jure Rozman, the Delray String Quartet will perform Chopin's Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11 in a 19th-century arrangement for piano and quartet. The string ensemble will also perform the second movement of String Quartet No. 7, "Psalms of Solace" by West Palm Beach-affiliated composer Richard Danielpour and Antonin
Dvořák's
String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96, known as the "American Quartet."
"Delray Beach is very fortunate to have a world class string quartet in residence. Thanks to their international stature, many people hear of Delray Beach only through the name of our famous string quartet!" says Dr. Paul Cienniwa, Director of Music at St. Paul's. "This performance is the first of two concertos that Music at St. Paul's is presenting this season. [The second, with the Amernet String Quartet and harpsichordist Paul Cienniwa will take place on April 28.] Not only are we honored to have Delray's internationally famous quartet playing at St. Paul's, but also we are lucky to present award-winning pianist Jure Rozman. In addition, we are excited to show 'American' music two ways, first with Danielpour's evocative quartet and then with
Dvořák's
Bohemian impression of America."
At 2:30pm, Dr. Paul Cienniwa will discuss the program in a pre-concert lecture. Tickets are a $20 suggested donation (18 and under are FREE) and are available at the door on the day of the concert. Ruah at the Ancient Spanish Monastery RESUMES
|
Wednesday, October 3 at 7:30 PM.
|
|
RUAH is a weekly worship service on
Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 8:30 PM at the Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach, located at 16711 West Dixie Highway. There is plenty of free parking.
RUAH is grounded in the Anglican tradition, a centuries-old liturgy that reveals the presence of God in our midst. We call this reality "sacramental." RUAH brings forth the richness of the mysteries of the Christian faith, practiced through the centuries by monks, nuns, mystics, saints, and ordinary people.
RUAH will engage the musical community in Miami and surrounding areas by bringing in guest musicians for each season who play instruments from around the world. Classical hymns and prayers are arranged with modern and ancient instrumentation, rhythms, and sounds. We will cross centuries and continents as we worship together in the liturgy the roots of which are in the earliest Christian community that was gathered after Jesus was raised from the dead.
RUAH, which means "spirit" or "breath" in Hebrew, invites all people, no matter your faith background, or no faith background at all, to breathe in God's living Spirit, and to rest in the beauty and wonder of the spoken word and the real presence of Christ among us with a backdrop of sound, light, shadow, and form.

Presiding Bishop Curry Thanks All for Prayers as he Returns to Work
|
"I want to thank you for all of the cards, and the well-wishes and, above all, for all of the prayers," Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry said in a video message posted on Facebook as he returns to work following prostate surgery in late July.
"I came through the surgery very well. Everything is good," Curry said in the video. "The pathology report was just fine, and I'm slowly but surely working my way back into the work I love to do." He describes reading through the hundreds of cards and letters sent to him at the Episcopal Church Center. "They are a blessing," he declared.

The General Convention
|
The General Convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church that meets every three years. It is a bicameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops, composed of deputies and bishops from each diocese. During its triennial meeting deputies and bishops consider a wide range of important matters facing the Church. In the interim between triennial meetings, various committees, commissions, agencies, boards and task forces created by the General Convention meet to implement the decisions and carry on the work of the General Convention. Data from 2017 Parochial Reports Now Available
|
The Reverend Canon Dr. Michael Barlowe, Executive Officer of the General Convention, has announced that data from the 2017 Parochial Reports of the Episcopal Church is now available in English and Spanish
here.
Canon Barlowe observed that the 2017 data "continues recent trends, with decline in key membership and attendance figures," although "congregational income through pledges and other offerings has increased," even as overall numbers of congregants have decreased.
The Parochial Report is the oldest, continuous gathering of data by the Episcopal Church. By tradition and canon, the reporting requirements are developed by the House of Deputies' Committee on the State of the Church, using a form approved by the church's Executive Council. Overseen by the Executive Officer of General Convention, the Parochial Report touches every congregation of the church. Together with other data, including that of the Recorder of Ordinations and the Registrar of General Convention, the Parochial Report provides an insight to the state of the church.
The newly posted documents include:
- Episcopal Domestic Fast Facts and Episcopal Domestic Fast Facts Trends 2013-2017
- Baptized Members by Province and Diocese 2007-2017
- Average Sunday Attendance by Province and Diocese 2007-2017
- Statistical Totals for The Episcopal Church by Province 2016-2017
- Statistical Totals for The Episcopal Church by Province and Diocese 2016-2017
- Domestic Plate and Pledge Income 2012-2017
- Average Pledge by Province and Diocese 2012-2017
- Financial and ASA Totals by Diocese 2017
Reports can be found on the General Convention website
here.

Called to Transformation
Facilitator Formation Workshops
Called to Transformation is a partnership between the Episcopal Church and Episcopal Relief
& Development
What is Asset-Based Community Development?
|
Registrations are now open for three
Called to Transformation Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) facilitator formation workshops in 2018.
The workshops will be held:
- Monday to Thursday, October 8 - 11 at Saint Columba Center in Memphis, TN
- Monday to Thursday, October 22 -25 two parallel tracks in Spanish and English at Mater Dolorosa Center in Los Angeles, CA.
The workshops are designed to train leaders in methods and tools to enhance local ministry and mission.
Participants need to attend only one of the workshops.
"The Episcopal Church Office of Latino/Hispanic Ministry is excited to be partnering in this first offering of ABCD training in Spanish which will serve the Latino population in the United States as well as our churches in Province IX in Latin America."
--The Rev. Canon Anthony Guillén, Episcopal Church Director for Ethnic Ministries and Missioner for Latino/Hispanic Ministries.
Asset-Based Community Development
The Asset-Based Community Development workshops and online toolkit
http://calledtotransformation.org/ were developed to train facilitators in leading a faith community in understanding the ABCD process, explained the Rev. Melanie Mullen, Episcopal Church Director of Reconciliation, Justice, and Creation Care.
Through the trainings, participants will learn about the theory and the practice of ABCD work, and then begin the process of creating a working plan to implement an Asset-Based Community Development project in their own ministry community.
Asset-Based Community Development engages communities at a grassroots level to recognize local assets - such as people, buildings, relationships and even faith - and creatively envision how to use that abundance to achieve goals and imagine new forms of ministry.
"ABCD focuses on the gifts and strengths of individuals, congregations and organizations, and helps community members dream new possibilities leveraging the gifts they have. By recognizing their own gifts, people are empowered to more deeply invest in achieving the shared goals of the community."
--
Sean McConnell, Episcopal Relief & Development's Senior Director of Engagement

MORE SMALL GRANTS!
|
In 2018, EC is offering 12 Small Grants of
$1000 each for start up or expanded basic human needs ministries in our diocese. In addition, two Small Grants are available for basic human needs programs in our companion dioceses. Those are the Diocese of Nassau and the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, the Diocese of the Dominican Republic, the Diocese of Haiti and The Diocese of Toliara.
The Companion Diocese Small Grants are designed to launch or enhance a basic human needs activity or ministry (hunger, clothing, shelter and healthcare focuses) that needs an infusion of cash with the understanding that other types of support will follow.
Companion Diocese Small Grant criteria are aligned with criteria for Diocesan Small Grants. (Criteria and application questions are available under Grant Applications on the Episcopal Charities website,
www.ecsefl.org).
Additional criteria are as follows:
A request must be for one of the companion dioceses and the two grants each year will not be made to the same Companion Diocese.
The program must be sponsored by a diocesan church(s)
Small Grants are made for programs, not individuals.
Like the Basic Human Needs Grant making program and Small Grants Program, the Companion Diocese Small Grant Program allocates grants to ministries/programs that address the needs of the community outside the walls of the church. Programs must be non-sectarian and contain no required religious content.

A Year Later, Virgin Islander Episcopalians Look Toward Long-Term Recovery from Irma, MariaTarpaulins, Nerves Frayed as Atlantic Hurricane Season Reaches Peak
By Lynette Wilson
A year after two devastating hurricanes swept through the Virgin Islands, building materials and skilled-labor shortages have delayed recovery. Blue tarpaulins covering damaged rooftops have frayed under the hot sun, and each threat of rain increases Virgin Islanders' anxiety, particularly as the Atlantic hurricane season reaches its peak.
