Message to the Clergy and Faithful
of
the Diocese of Southeast Florida
Pastoral Visit of the Presiding Bishop
to
the Keys on 13 January 2018
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
In January our Presiding Bishop, in his capacity as Chief Pastor of our Church, will be visiting a number of communities that were so badly devastated by recent hurricanes. He will be visiting Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Texas, and the Keys.
On Saturday, 13 January, the Presiding Bishop and his travel group will visit each of our congregations, meet and pray with our parishioners and community leaders, preach at a special community-wide service at Saint Columba, Marathon, and see first-hand some of the devastation and ongoing challenges that the Keys are facing.
This visit is a wonderful expression of the support of the Presiding Bishop for all that we are doing in the Keys in the work of relief and recovery, but it is also a visible expression of the support of our Episcopal Church, from which we have received so much financial and practical help since the hurricane.
Please remember the second phase of our appeal as the New Year dawns. My hope is to take more financial help to the Keys when we go on this pastoral visit so that we may continue to show our sisters and brothers who are dealing with severe challenges with faithfulness and determination that we have not forgotten them.
With gratitude and every blessing.
+Peter 2 January 2018
New Archdeacon of Southeast Florida
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
I am delighted to announce that, with the consent of the Standing Committee, I have appointed the Reverend Faye Somers, who is the Chaplain of the Lower School at Saint Andrew's School, Boca, and the deacon at the Chapel of Saint Andrew, the Archdeacon of Southeast Florida. This is a non-stipendiary role, and she will remain in these two responsibilities as she takes on this new task.
In this capacity Deacon Somers will have oversight
with
me of the diaconal ministry of our diocese. She will maintain relationships with our deacons, work with me on assignments, and oversee the further development of diaconal ministry. She will be assisted in this work by a council of deacons.
We shall install Deacon Somers into this new responsibility at the Chrism Mass on Tuesday, 16 April, at 12 noon. All are welcome to that service.
As we announce this new responsibility, I want to take this opportunity to thank the Reverend Canon Hap Lewis for the many years of service that he has given in supporting the work of our deacons. He has been a faithful servant in this work, and he hands over to Deacon Somers a good tradition. We shall celebrate his ministry with our deacons
at
the same service.
Archdeacon Fritz Bazin will continue as Archdeacon for Immigration and Social Justice.
Please join me in welcoming Deacon Somers to this new work among us, and please keep her and all our deacons in your prayers.
With every blessing.

A Message to the Clergy and Faithful
of
the Diocese of Southeast Florida
Two Retirements
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
As the New Year approaches, we are celebrating the ministries of two faithful servants of our diocese.
At the end of the year, Ms Brenda Rasmus, who has served on the Bishop's Staff since 2002, retires after 15 years of service. She has worked primarily in the area of deployment and ministry discernment, and so most of the clergy who have been trained or deployed in our diocese over the last 15 years will have been shepherded by her through many procedural complexities. Brenda has been attentive, faithful, and helpful to all in this vital work, and she retires with my deep gratitude as well as with the gratitude of our entire diocesan family. We shall miss her warm, quiet presence among the Bishop's Staff, and while the Bishop's Staff is being re-
organised
, Gail McShane will be supporting the ongoing work of deployment and congregational development.
In early January, the Dean of our Cathedral, the Very Reverend Doug McCaleb, retires after 12 years of service as our Dean and after over 30 years of ordained ministry. Not only a faithful pastor of his own community, Dean McCaleb has served the City of Miami, our diocese, and the wider Church with a winning mixture of commitment, wisdom, and
humour
. He will say Goodbye to the Cathedral congregation on Sunday, 7 January, at the morning liturgies, and to the larger diocesan community on Sunday, 14 January, at Evensong.
Please join us on 14 January for Evensong at 6 pm to wish Dean McCaleb farewell and to give thanks to God for his ministry among us. Clergy are invited to vest in choir habit.
With every blessing,
+Peter

Friendly Annual Reminders from the Bishop's Office
As the calendar year ends and a new one begins, there are a few items which
need
to be managed to keep your congregation in good standing in the
Diocese:
Annual Congregation Meeting
Each Episcopal Congregation is required to conduct an annual business
meeting
, where, among other matters, congregation lay leaders are elected,
among
them, Convention Delegates and Alternates every two years.
Canon
XIV requires the meeting be conducted by the last day of January each
year.
Parochial Report Filing
The Parochial Report is due to be recorded by February 28th each year.
While the national canon requires the filing be completed at another date,
our
annual budget process dictates an earlier filing, as it is essential to the
development
of next year's budget.
Key Personnel Report
To
best
enable the Bishop's office to communicate with the appropriate
church
leader you need to file an updated Key Personnel Listing.
This
report
is due to be filed
on-line
by February 28th of each year. You should
update
the report anytime a change in your leadership occurs.
Annual Corporate Report
The annual corporate filing with the State of Florida is required to keep
your
Church Corporation viable. I
t is due to Tallahassee by April 30th.
Annual Congregation and Discretionary Fund Audits
One of the useful tools to maintain transparency in each congregation is to
prepare
an annual audit of the church books, this protects the integrity of
the
records, and those who do this work. The annual audit is due into the
Bishop's office by September first each year

Presiding Bishop Plans Pastoral Visits to Hurricane Affected Areas
In the Keys this Weekend
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael B. Curry will embark on four pastoral visits in January 2018 to the hurricane affected areas of Florida, Texas and the Caribbean.
"When the cameras have left, when the world's attention has gone elsewhere, when other news is the new news of the day, the Church remains bearing witness to the Good News of Jesus," Presiding Bishop Curry said. "These trips are an opportunity to call to mind our commitment to walk with our brothers and sisters, not just for the short run of the news cycles, for the long haul as communities are rebuilt and built anew. These pastoral visits are a reminder of the promise of Jesus who said to his followers, 'I will be with you even until the end of the age.' And it's a way of saying that we, as fellow followers of Jesus, will be with you too."
At each locale, the Presiding Bishop will tour the affected areas, offer and lead prayers, and meet with Episcopal leadership and
congregants
.
He will be accompanied by members of the Presiding Bishop's staff and representatives of Episcopal Relief & Development.
His schedule is:
January 2 - 4: Diocese of Puerto Rico
January 10-12: Diocese of the Virgin Islands
January 13-14: Diocese of Southeast Florida
January 29-31: Diocese of Texas

RUAH
Wednesday Nights at 7:30 P.M
|
RUAH is a weekly worship service on Wednesday nights from
7:30 to 8:30pm at the Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach, located at
16711 West Dixie Highway.
There is plenty of free parking.
RUAH is grounded in the Anglican tradition, a
centuries
-old liturgy that reveals the presence of God in our midst. We call this reality "sacramental." RUAH brings forth the richness of the mysteries of the Christian faith, practiced through the centuries by monks, nuns, mystics, saints, and ordinary people.
RUAH will engage the musical community in Miami and surrounding areas by bringing in guest musicians for each season who play instruments from around the world. Classical hymns and prayers are arranged with modern and ancient instrumentation, rhythms, and sounds. We will cross centuries and continents as we worship together in the liturgy the roots of which are in
the earliest
Christian community that was gathered after Jesus was raised from the dead.
RUAH, which means "spirit" or "breath" in Hebrew, invites all people, no matter your faith background, or no faith background at all, to breathe in God's living Spirit, and to rest in the beauty and wonder of the spoken word and the real presence of Christ among us with a backdrop of sound, light, shadow, and form.

Wisdom Calling: A Conference on Local Formation
February 8 - 10, 2018
|
More and more, Episcopal dioceses are relying on local formation to train up leaders for parish ministry. In many dioceses, the majority of clergy are now part-time, and 13% of clergy across our church are volunteers. As these ministry models become more common, the importance of local theological formation will only increase. Today, it is time for the Episcopal Church to think as carefully and invest as intentionally in local formation as we long have for residential seminary training, as a vital seedbed for the leaders of tomorrow's church. Should we endeavor to make local formation as much like residential seminary as possible? What can be gained by immersion in local ministry contexts that the traditional seminary model can't give? And what practical tools, best practices, and collaborative partnerships are available to strengthen local formation across our church?
In this conference for theological educators and diocesan leaders, we will explore these questions with theologians, educators, and practitioners from across our church, and build relationships with peers and potential collaborative partners. We will consider questions like:
- What is a theological education for?
- How does answering that question help us formulate a vision for excellence in local formation?
- What best practices and fruitful ideas can be learned from experienced hands in local formation from around our church?
- What are the most pressing educational needs of locally-trained priests and deacons whose vocation will likely not include full-time paid employment by the church?
- How can we best train and authorize the work of licensed lay ministers, in addition to ordained leaders?
- What practical tools and resources (e.g., online classes) can be added to a local formation toolbox?
- What partnerships (e.g., with seminaries, parishes, and other dioceses) are to hand to build up local formation programs?
This conference includes presentations from respected leaders, as well as ample time for open discussion of topics of interest among the gathered attendees. Our invited speakers will help guide our discussions.

Bishop Eaton contributes to New Publication:
The Oxford History of Anglicanism,
Volume V
|
Oxford University Press has launched the first multi-volume, international history of Anglicanism ever to be published, and our Bishop is one of the contributors. Over 100 scholars from around the Communion have been part of this project, and the Bishop wrote the chapter on the relations between the Anglican Communion and the Churches of the Christian East in the 20th century in volume V. This volume was published in December, and all volumes in the series are now in print.
"It was an honor to be asked by Professor Sachs, the editor of this volume, to be a contributor," the Bishop has said. "I did most of the research for the chapter when I was still the Dean in Denver and when I was a Fellow-in-Residence at Sewanee, but I had to do a great deal of the final work on the chapter after we moved to Miami. It meant some late nights and some early mornings, and I tried the patience of the editor very sorely. But he was extremely supportive and helpful, and we got it done."
Asked why he had been invited to do this,
Bishop Eaton said,
"I have been interested in the Churches of the East since I was a teenager, and our dialogue and relations have been a significant part of my work throughout my life as a priest and bishop,"
Bishop Eaton
said. "While the 20th century was a terrible century for humanity in so many ways, it was a time of radical - and positive - change in the relationship between the Churches. Anglicans and Eastern Christians in particular came to a special relationship.
"Sadly the Churches, especially the great traditions of Anglicanism, Roman Catholicism
and
Orthodoxy
,
have lost some of that ecumenical vision that so inspired our predecessors in the last century, and part of the point of my chapter is to ensure that we do not lose sight of a time when we were very close. If it happened once, it can happen again, and we can turn towards each other afresh in mutual respect and appreciation for the singular witness that our traditions bring to the life of the universal Church."
The Bishop's chapter, "Relations between the Churches of the Anglican Communion and the Churches of Eastern Christianity," appears in The Oxford History of Anglicanism Volume V: Global Anglicanism c 1910-2000, edited by William Sachs, and published in the UK on 14 December 2017.

July 17-25 at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. SUMMA Camp is a unique opportunity for students to explore their faith through intellectual channels, meet lifelong friends, and have a lot of fun on one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country!
At SUMMA Camp, students of all faiths learn valuable skills for debate, public speaking, and theological reflection. No previous debate experience or formal theological study is necessary. Campers have a true collegiate experience, but camp is not all work! There is plenty of time left over to swim, play sports, watch movies, go bowling, and have lots of great, summer fun!
For all students, the cost of SUMMA is partially defrayed through donations, grants, and an endowment. The cost to parents is $750, which includes room, all meals, and all materials.
A limited number of scholarships are available for students with demonstrated financial need.

42: Inspiring Teens Through Fun, Friendship, and Faith
|
Winterlight
is a celebrated Kanuga tradition open to high school students grades 9-12, recent high school graduates, and adult chaperones. As part of the Kanuga Empowered Youth (KEY) Conference series, Winterlight brings in the new year.
Take this chance to get away from the distractions of everyday life and spend time meeting new friends, hanging out with old ones, singing, dancing, ringing in the New Year; and exploring your thoughts and beliefs. Participants come together in an inclusive fellowship that embodies the vibrancy of the national Episcopal Church. Adult chaperones will attend all plenary sessions and have their own workshops.
The theme for Winterlight 42 is
#Blessed
: We often think of blessedness as health, material wealth, and happiness. We will explore the Beatitudes (Matthew 5: 1-12) and Jesus' message of true blessing. What does it mean for the poor, oppressed, and marginalized to be blessed? How can we be a blessing to the world?

Presiding Bishop in Puerto Rico Exchanges Messages of Hope as Struggles Persist after Hurricane
|
Curry was in Puerto Rico on a pastoral visit, and he preached Jan. 3 in the evening at the Episcopal cathedral in San Juan, the capital of the U.S. territory. The earlier stop in Toa Baja introduced Curry and his delegation to Hugs of Love, a series of pop-up medical clinics the diocese has offered since the hurricane through the health care system it runs. This and other ministries are strengthened by ecumenical partnerships and through collaboration with federal agencies, local nonprofits and the Episcopal Church's Episcopal Relief & Development.
Curry walked through the tents shaking hands and doling out hugs to the diocesan volunteers and some of the hundreds of residents who had come for the daylong clinic. They waited their turns to receive blood pressure checks, blood tests, vaccinations, prescription refills and other medical services, all provided free by doctors and nurses from Episcopal Hospital San Lucas, based in Ponce.
Everyone from the San Lucas system gets involved in the pop-up clinics, Jesus Cruz Correa, the hospital's medical director, told Curry. "We rotate the doctors." Patients who need further medical attention are referred to the hospital for follow-up visits.
A box truck from the hospital, parked near one of the tents, was filled with food, water and personal hygiene items for distribution to the families. Lunch and music were included in the event, along with activities for the children.

The Reverend Robert Shires
RIP
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the Reverend Robert "Bo" Shires, beloved husband of Beth, and beloved father and grandfather. Bo died on January 8th, after being struck by a truck just outside the gate of their retirement community in Pompano Beach.
Father Bo and Beth retired last spring from the Church of the Advent in Palm City. They subsequently made Saint Joseph's, Boyton Beach, their parish home, where Father Bo celebrated the liturgies this past weekend.
Please pray for Father Bo, and please pray also for Beth and their family.
We will share more information about the funeral as it becomes available.
