Connecting Students to Horticulture
|
Every March we get a huge boost in horticulture. The
National Collegiate Landscape Competition
brings together horticulture students from across the country, and Hoffman Nursery is there to help them develop their skills and meet their future. As sponsors of the Annual and Perennial Plant Identification event, we spend time with a group of the brightest and most enthusiastic students. It's an experience we recommend to everyone in the industry.
This year's collegiate competition is at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan on
March 18-21, 2020
. Our local student horticultural teams have been performing work days at the nursery and earning funds to attend. They're prepping, psyching themselves up, and will be ready to go in March.
The big news this year is that our local collegiate horticulture programs are organizing a regional event modeled on the national competition. Scheduled for
February 27-28, 2020
, the
North Carolina High School Landscape Competition
is aimed at high school students, with an emphasis on education and introducing them to the range of horticultureal careers. Students will get to stretch their horticultural wings and spend time with professionals in the field. It's a great opportunity to bring more students into horticulture and to connect them with industry and education. The event is a collaboration among six collegiate and eleven high school horticulture programs in central North Carolina.
Hoffman Nursery will be at both events sponsoring the annual and perennial plant identification. We're looking forward to both and will report back on them!

Grasses at Work in a City Park
|
It's always gratifying to know our grasses are helping improve communities. We heard recently from Leigh Bragassa with the City of Raleigh (NC) Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources about their project in Meadowbrook Park. The city aims to restore the natural plants and animals in the park. This past fall, they began removing invasive plants and replanting cleared areas.
They're stabilizing slopes with
Schizachyrium scoparium
'Twilight Zone',
Andropogon virginicus
, Asters, and Daffodils.
Andropogon glomeratus
and
Juncus effusus
went in along a streambank with Cypress and Buttonbush where invasive plants were removed.
We loved seeing pictures of our liners being planted and look forward to following their progress. Good luck to the crew and thanks for sharing!
