A Word from Bob Weir

"One of the things that I hope I’m remembered for is bringing our culture and other cultures together—by virtue or by example of…I’m hoping that people of varying persuasions will find something they can agree on in the music that I’ve offered, and find each other through it."

-Bob Weir (1947-2026), founding member of Grateful Dead

Sermon: Dead & Community

During the month of August, Chris Currie has given a sermon series, "The Soundtrack of Faith: Behind the Music" related to music and faith, but in particular how these artists have shaped his faith through their songwriting, lyrics, and unique sound. This week his last sermon in the series is centered on the band Grateful Dead and their community.

David LaMotte to Speak & Perform at SCAPC this Sunday

This Sunday, August 30, songwriter/speaker/author David LaMotte will visit SCAPC for a day of love and music! He will lead a Sunday School class, "Which Kind of Love", at 9:30 a.m. and give a concert at 5 p.m., both in Frampton Fellowship Hall. There will be nursery care during the 9:30 class as well as children’s activities in the second floor Learning Center.

David is heralded by BBC Radio Belfast as bringing “charm, stories, insightful songs, sweet voice, and dazzling guitar ability” to his events. He has performed his folk music at over 3000 concerts in all 50 states as well as abroad. He has spoken to the Presbyterian Church (USA) Mission to the United Nations and at peace conferences in India, Australia, Germany, and the Scottish Parliament.

JLNO Diaper Bank Collection

As part of National Diaper Need Awareness Week, we are collecting diapers, period products, and adult incontinence products for the Junior League of New Orleans Diaper Bank, one of SCAPC's community ministry partners, now through September 30. Please bring items to the bin by the chapel entrance.

Meet Ruth Hickox: SCAPC Phifer Library Volunteer

Ruth moved to this community several years ago to be near her grandchildren. She has worshipped at SCAPC and been part of several RHINO Disaster relief trips, including the Texas Hill Country trip, and has traveled on our Borderland mission trips as well. Ruth’s background includes her career as a literary specialist helping children with reading and writing challenges.

Most Mondays, from 9 a.m. to noon, Ruth will be in SCAPC's Phifer Library, and you are welcome to join her. During this time, she will be putting together a featured lending cart that will be placed in the hallway outside the library and changed monthly. She will also be looking through books that could be donated to the Carriage House, and she will be putting together a ‘Critics Corner’ group that meets in the library on Monday mornings (once a month) with book recommendations and new book ideas. Ruth plans to implement an easy checkout system with a simple sign-out sheet. Lendees will be encouraged to return books at their leisure. Ruth plans to start ‘Library Mondays’ on Monday, September 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Come and join her!

YMCA Educational Services Program

Peter Finney Jr., a national sports writer and former editor of the Clarion Herald, recently authored a great story on Dr. Amy Leggette, the Executive Director of YMCA Educational Services (YES), one of SCAPC's community ministry partners. Every year, YES provides adult basic literacy, high school equivalency testing, and English as a Second Language classes to 400 teens, young adults, working adults, and seniors. They have five locations across the Greater New Orleans area. Leggette says, "Some YMCA students experienced dyslexia or had auditory problems as children, some were displaced or had to quit school to start working as teenagers, and some are working parents in their 20s and 30s who trend toward online services because they need flexible schedules in caring for their children...More than half of our students are below the second-grade reading level."

STAIR Boxing Week: Volunteers Needed

The STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) program housed in the SCAPC Land Building is seeking volunteers to assemble boxes for their tutors and students as the new school year launches! Volunteers are needed Monday, August 31 through Friday, September 4 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you are available for an hour or more, find the volunteer link on our Volunteer page.

Youth Socks Fundraiser Sell-Out!

This past Sunday at their fundraiser, SCAPC Youth sold out their custom socks. We are beyond grateful to the congregation, as all sales will go to our youth curriculum, retreats, food, and other necessities in the coming year. While the youth group fundraiser will no longer return next week due to selling out, Chris Hazlaris plans to reorder more socks and have another fundraiser soon for anyone that missed out on the custom SCAPC swag.

Seeing God All Over the World

Thank you to all who have sent us postcards sharing where you've seen God this summer! We have shared them on the bulletin board in Frampton Fellowship Hall. Here is one we received this week:

Jessie Bruggers and Sean Chaney wrote:

"Hi, SCAPC friends! We've had a great trip to Wilmington, North Carolina to spend time with family. We saw God through all of the quality time with family and the ocean waves at Wrightsville Beach. We're so thankful we had a week to relax and all be together!

-Jessie, Sean, and Hazel
