Rochester, New York – An innovative international art show is being hosted by a woman’s group of non-violent advocates November 15 through December 14, 2024. Titled “ProCreative,” the exhibit is sponsored by Feminists Choosing Life of New York and is curated by Board of Directors member Alisia Chase, Ph.D., SUNY Brockport Professor of Art History.
Exhibit Dates: November 15 - December 14, 2024
Feminists Choosing Life of NY Office
1545 East Ave. Mon. - Fri. 10am - 3pm, or by request
According to Chase, the art work will question the current feminist narrative that a woman’s autonomy is her greatest strength and that pregnancy is a barrier to woman’s creativity. “A woman possesses twice the procreative powers of a man because she is capable of not only creating great works of art, but of gestating and giving birth to a new human life.”
Featured artwork includes graphic design, painting, sketches, filmmaking, sculpting, and textiles. Drawings from high school students at Chesterton Academy, and even sketches drawn by Lauren Handy– a current prisoner of conscience– will be included. The artists themselves are from all across the globe, including the USA, Canada, Russia, Romania, Poland, and United Arab Emirates.
Of particular interest are handmade textiles submitted by Brightstar Community in Rochester NY, and crafted by sex trafficking survivors from Thistle Farms in Nashville, TN. The Farm is headquarters of 70 anti- trafficking organizations. Brightstar is one of the houses supporting vulnerable women in Rochester. “This exhibition showcases the raw vulnerability surrounding womanhood and the creation of life through art in ways New York State has never seen before,” says Sarah Prentice, Deputy Outreach Coordinator of Feminists Choosing Life of NY.
On top of regular viewing hours, there will be two other events accompanying the exhibit: a talk on motherhood and femininity by Dr. Chase on November 30th, and the show’s holiday themed closing party on December 14th.
