Family, Feasts & Folklore

Celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday in November, Thanksgiving is a cherished time for gathering with loved ones, sharing hearty meals, and celebrating the rich tapestry of traditions passed down through generations.

It is a holiday embodying the spirit of gratitude and togetherness, offering an opportunity to reflect on the blessings in our lives. Whether it's the laughter shared around a bustling table, the aromatic scents of a feast being prepared, or the warmth of stories retold year after year, Thanksgiving is a reminder of the importance of community and connection.

In addition to the joyful feasts, Thanksgiving is steeped in folklore and history enriching the holiday's meaning. From tales of the first Thanksgiving between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people to the diverse cultural traditions that have evolved over time, these stories are an integral part of the celebration, providing a backdrop of shared heritage and cultural exchange among communities.

In Your Community

Help get meals to your neighbors

The Community Food Bank of New Jersey needs frozen turkeys and canned food to distribute to charities that feed our less fortunate neighbors.

Cash donations to purchase turkeys will be gratefully accepted.

Many New Jersey families are struggling to pay their bills and still put food on the table. Some can't stretch their budgest far enough to purchase the traditional Thanksgiving groceries. With your help, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey will be able to provide that meal.

Please drop off a frozen (never thawed) turkey, canned food, or financial donations at the Ridgewood Avenue Train Station on Saturday, November 23rd from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Financial donations allow the Food Bank to buy turkeys at wholesale prices. Checks (earmarked "turkey drive") may also be sent to the Community Food Bank, 31 Evans Terminal Road, Hillside, NJ 07205.
