Robert Emmons, perhaps the world's leading scientific expert on gratitude, states that gratitude has two key components: "First, it's an affirmation of goodness. We affirm that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits we've received."

In the second part of gratitude, he explains, "We recognize that the sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves. We acknowledge that other people give us many gifts, big and small, to help us achieve the goodness in our lives."

We have a great opportunity to practice expressing our gratitude and appreciation for all that we have and enjoy in our lives, by giving something meaningful away. 

Thanks to an idea from Carryn Schram (daughter of Yoga Bella student Jean Broich),Yoga Bella is collecting gifts for the Kids Can Give Program of the Twin Cities Boys and Girls Clubs.  When you are out and about shopping or dining, consider picking up an extra gift or two for a family in need.  Items for infants, children and moms are all needed.  Collection period is between now and December 8th.
Boys & Girls Clubs
The Boys and Girls Club's Formula for Impact defines specific strategies to increase quality programming for three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. They are implementing a Club Experience filled with life-changing programs, fun, enriching activities, and supportive relationships with peers and caring adults. The combination of these critical elements enables and empowers Club youth to achieve positive outcomes. Kids Can Give

The Clubs are open each day after school until about 9pm (school age kids leave at 7...teens can stay until 9).  A membership to the club costs $5/School year and only $20 for the whole summer.

Yoga Encourages Resilience - Your Practice Off Your Mat

Resilience means that no matter what our circumstances are, we are able to begin fresh and try again.

If we haven't eaten well for breakfast, we begin anew at lunch.

If we've made a choice we regret, we reframe our thinking and start with a new choice the next day.

To be resilient like this, we need to cultivate acceptance, letting go of control over the past. It happened; now we move on. Haven't we heard our instructors telling us this over and over again?

No matter what happens to us at home, in the workplace, or in a relationship, we can learn to use challenges as opportunities to grow, to increase our awareness, to discover new methods to move ahead.

Setbacks are inevitable, disappointments and failures happen, but what defines us is how we respond to setbacks.

Henry Ford said, "Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently."
