Thanksgiving and Giving Tuesday are thematically linked with the universal values of gratitude and generosity. At its highest state, gratitude is an acceptance and celebration of all that we are, have, and aspire to. Generosity, at its peak, is the recognition that we have enough to share with others.

On Thanksgiving, we gather with family and friends to celebrate life’s blessings. On Giving Tuesday, we extend that celebration outward, donating our time, energy, and resources to organizations that uplift our communities. Both days remind us that life’s true meaning transcends the individual—that we are active participants in the broader community of humanity.

While we may hold a wide range of beliefs and perspectives, life is at its best when we unite in the shared values of connection, support, and service to one another.

At The Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA), we commemorate Giving Tuesday by showcasing our intergenerational approach to uplifting South Los Angeles. This year, we share the inspiring story of Lonette and Ian Flowers:

As a high school student, Lonette began serving the community through GCLA. Years later, when she became a mother, she enrolled her son Ian in GCLA’s Early Education Center. As a youth, Ian participated in our Project LEAYD Youth Development Program, and now, as an adult, he gives back to the community as a Peer Navigator while pursuing his educational goals.

Stories like theirs illustrate that the seeds we plant today grow into tomorrow’s leaders.

The next Nipsey Hussle doesn’t have to join a gang. The next Dolores Huerta doesn’t have to begin in the farmlands. The next Kawhi Leonard doesn’t need to touch a basketball to build a billion-dollar brand. The next Michelle Obama can inspire and lead in any arena she chooses.

Our future leaders are being nurtured, raised, and empowered today.

El Día de Acción de Gracias y el Giving Tuesday están profundamente vinculados con los valores universales de gratitud y generosidad.
