It is important to let our gratitude “leak out” in all directions—beyond our usual sphere of life. A great deal of violence and division permeates our media these days, and if we inject some gratefulness into the discussions, the hard edges erode somewhat—creating an opening for compassion to peak through.
As families gather for Thanksgiving in our part of the world, I visualize the joy of loving connections oozing out to feed and clothe everyone. This is a prayer Tarn and I say with every meal:
May all whose life has been given
And all whose labor has brought this food before us
May we be ever grateful
And use this exquisite nutrition
To be of benefit to all beings
