Gratitude in Advent

by Father Casey

Advent may have only just begun, but Christmas came early for me this year. Returning to Transfiguration after a life-changing three month break from my work, and then experiencing the warmth of your embrace on my first weekend back…it has felt like an extended Christmas morning. Add to it the joyful surprise of seeing the brand new display cases housing our Heritage Edition of The St. John’s Bible, and it begins to feel like a dream. As I shared in my sermon last week, I cannot thank you enough for the gift you gave me this fall, for it was the most precious of all gifts: time. I return to my work, and to our mission, with renewed energy and commitment, and with an even greater appreciation for our wonderful staff team and all the people who serve and lead here.

It also happens to be my favorite season of the church year! I love the Advent wreath with its slowly lighting clock. I love the angels gazing down at us from the closed triptych – Gabriel, archangel of the first advent, and Michael, archangel of the last advent. I love Advent hymnody, both the texts and the tunes. I love the Biblical characters...

Join the Journey

Two great opportunities to aid in your personal reflection and preparation to greet the King take place this weekend:

Tales of Magi

A special Advent Formation offering starts this Sunday in Roper Hall. A panel of clergy and scholars will lead this three-part series from 10:15am -11:00am for the three Sundays leading us to Christmas. Tales of Magi focuses on how the story of the Magi in Matthew's Gospel has inspired O. Henry, T.S. Elliot, and countless others to retell the story of their quest. This class is designed to spark the imaginations of parishioners of all ages. Join us in Roper Hall as we follow the Star to the Savior. If you are unable to join in person, you can register below for the Zoom virtual offering.

Our chapter of Episcopal Peace Fellowship invites you to join them in writing notes to our elected officials, in the Staff Conference Room, on Sunday from 10:00am until about 2:00am. While you’re free to address any topic, we suggest three topics connected to current legislation: Extending Temporary Protected Status for Central American refugees; Defending the rights of Palestinian children living under occupation (HR 2590); Supporting a Truth and Healing Commission for Indigenous Boarding Schools (HR 5444, S 2907). Come and add your voice to those of other Christians. We have a duty to make our voices heard!
