February 27, 2012--Graywolf Press is delighted to announce the launch of a new publishing collaboration with innovative literary magazine A Public Space. Brigid Hughes, founding editor of A Public Space, will act as contributing editor to Graywolf Press, where she will use her sharp editorial eye to find work from the magazine's fiction and nonfiction contributors that will fit well with the Graywolf list. Graywolf plans to publish two A Public Space books per year, with "A Public Space Book" printed on the back cover and in the interior. The inaugural book will be selected in the coming months.
Graywolf Press director and publisher Fiona McCrae feels confident that the new partnership will be fruitful for both organizations. "I have known Brigid for some years now, and have been impressed by her energy, taste, and the way she has established A Public Space as one of today's leading literary magazines," she said. "Many of our authors, including Ander Monson, Francis Spufford, and our new Nonfiction Prize winner, Leslie Jamison, have appeared in the pages of A Public Space, so our editorial visions are already aligned."
Hughes's editorial role will include structural and line editing with the authors of the A Public Space books, as well as writing catalog and jacket copy. Graywolf will be responsible for publishing and promoting each title, though both organizations are looking forward to collaborations on author events and other opportunities, beginning with a shared booth space at this fall's Brooklyn Book Festival.
Brigid Hughes, who was the executive editor at the Paris Review before founding A Public Space in 2006, said, "The collaboration is a natural extension of our work with writers in A Public Space--it will be wonderful to stay involved in a piece that starts in our pages as it progresses to a full-length book to be published by Graywolf, one of the great independent presses in the country."
