Great Advice—Shame About the Follow-Through

Greetings!

You may relate. Have you ever given someone really good advice … and they completely ignored it? Said person came to you in a flap, a quandary and in need of some conversational succour and a stiff drink. So you pulled out all the stops and shared your wisdom, best take and shoulder and you feel satisfied that you made a difference and helped someone.

They nod, smile and may even write it down and order another round. You are looking forward to the update where your insights and advised saved the day. Catching up you hear they not only didn’t take your advice but did the very opposite and you can be forgiven for thinking “well that was a waste of some excellent sentences and a hangover/coffee headache”.

So here’s the thing. People don’t take advice. Full stop. You may do all the intellectual /philosophical acrobatics in your power that would make Cirque du Soleil look like slouches but no amount of wisdom, truth or lived experience will sway someone who wants to do it their way.

Stop “Shoulding” All Over Me

I don’t know about you but I immediately switch off when people start telling me what I should or ought to do. “Should” is a stick. “I should go to the gym (but I don’t want to”, “I should eat a Mediterranean diet (but my stomach says loaded fries Bronx-style)”.

Should’s and outght’s are agendas that we can choose to ignore or buy into. Because change isn’t transactional it’s personal. Insight isn’t transferable even if you think you know best what would work for someone else. It’s experiential. Growth doesn’t come from being told—it comes from seeing via personal insight.

What coaches actually do (when we’re at our best)

A coach doesn’t give advice. I know, it’s a shocking fact. It’s more powerful than that.

A coach:

  • Holds the space while someone wrestles with their own thinking
  • Asks the question that unlocks the next layer
  • Notices what’s not being said
  • Helps clients hear themselves more clearly

In other words, we don’t provide the map. Resist, gentle reader, from giving unsolicited advice unless you are prepared to see you wise words pushed to the side of the plate like limp lettuce.

However if you want to learn some of these coaching power tools. Read on.
