GFDA's Top 10

Here is our Top 11 for last week celebrating work and successes to grow and strengthen the Great Falls regional economy -- Montana's Golden Triangle. And, sharing business resources and skill-building opportunities to empower your success.

1) Local developer Silver Stone Enterprises plans to build a 432-unit apartment complex in Great Falls at the intersection of 2nd Avenue North and 38th Street North. GFDA is excited to be working with Trace Timmer and his team in support of the project. See TheElectric. The Housing Market Assessment we commissioned last year in partnership with NeighborWorks Great Falls and the Great Falls Association of Realtors documented market demand for 1,880 new rental units and 2,540 new for-sale housing units in the Great Falls commute shed. Those figures did not include demand stemming from the Touro College of Montana Medicine, the USAF Ground Based Strategic Deterrent mission, or population growth over the last year.

2) Cost of Living in the Great Falls metro remained competitive in 2022Q2 at 87.8% of the national average, according to the C2ER (the Council for Community and Economic Research). Compare our local rate to Bozeman's 121.8%, Denver's 111.0%, Boise's 109.3%, or Spokane's 102.7%. Use our Cost of Living Calculator when trying to recruit new employees from our of town.

3) GFDA was happy to assist a long-time client, Ox & Son Towing & Recovery, LLC with a bridge loan in the amount of $708,000. This bridge loan is allowing time for their bank to finish its permanent financing package without interrupting the client’s expansion plans. If your business has a need or capital hurdle that may need some creative thinking and financing please reach out to Jill Kohles at [email protected] to discuss your different options.

4) The Great Falls region is gearing up for the decade of construction starting as early as 2025 for the major USAF Ground Based Strategic Deterrent mission. The Air Force projects that the construction on base at Malmstrom AFB and in missile fields in the region will create 7,201 direct and indirect jobs with project labor income of $540 million and total economic output in the region of $1,080 million.

5) THIS WEEK we are launching a new low interest loan participation product in partnership with the Montana Department of Commerce that will provide 50/50 loan participations with your bank or credit union. We are already processing potential deals to move projects forward that otherwise could not. These funds are limited and will be put to work very quickly to help our economy recover and come back stronger than ever. If you have a business startup or expansion planned that could benefit from a loan participation, contact Jill at [email protected] or 1-406-590-1056.

6) Thirty four business professionals and entrepreneurs joined the September presentation of our Small Business Webinar Series. Managing the Human Side of Change explored the cycles of employee engagement and the triggers leading to job satisfaction or turnover. Special thanks to our presenter, Robert Farmer, Senior Vice President of People Solutions at Clearwater Credit Union in Missoula, as well as our collaborating partners at the University of Montana and MSU-Extension. 7) Great Falls is home to a new Mexican restaurant, La Cocina Restaurante in the former Fox Farm Diner building. First time entrepreneurs Antonio Verbera and Josefa Davis have made their dream of business ownership a reality. Learn more in the Announcement of the Week.

"That’s been one of my mantras – focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains."
