A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DR. FLINT FOWLER
|
|
Summer is here, and it's time for a fun, affordable, and positive summer camp experience for thousands of youth. BGCSTL programs empower and motivate young people to become productive, responsible caring citizens. Children and teens have positive outcomes when they participate in fun, structured summer activities that keep them engaged intellectually, socially, and physically. It is the best way to reduce summer learning loss and prepare them for the next school year. We know our programs and supportive relationships lead to Great Futures.
Recently we celebrated our annual recognition event where we inducted six former club members into the Alumni Hall of Honor. The Hall of Honor recognizes former members for excelling in their careers and communities, and continued connection to the Club.. That's why we are so passionate about the work. BGCSTL is proof-positive that working together we can make a difference in our community, as a volunteer, mentor or by simply enrolling your children in one of eleven locations.

-
What brought you to Mathews-Dickey? My love for baseball blossomed into a desire to give back to children like adults gave to me.
2. What was your title when you started at MD? Junior Commissioner-- I was the administrator to 75 baseball teams and coaches, along with the scheduler for around 50 umpires.
3. What has been most rewarding for you, devoting your career to MD? The most rewarding for me was being able to save the lives of young people and guide them on a positive route to life by acquiring an education and becoming productive citizens.
4. What were some of the greatest lessons learned from Mr. Mathews & from being at MD for 50 years? The greatest lesson I learned was always to be willing to give of yourself because that is why we were placed on this earth, to help others.

Young Member Becomes An Author
|
The journey of the Author and eight-year-old Zara D. is an incredible one.
Zara wrote "Broken Promises" due to her real-life experience with her Dad. According to her Mom, Mia, Zara was struggling with the disappointment of her Dad making promises he never kept. Mia said, "I could see she was becoming angry, so I found a therapist to get ahead of future problems." Mia added, "I knew she would have to learn to deal with disappointments." Therapy worked! The therapist, named in the book, told Zara to put her thoughts and feelings on paper. The final product was a book. Zara took it home to her Mom and told her she wanted to write a "real" book that would touch someone's heart. Zara celebrated her birthday in May with a book signing at Clay Elementary School. It was a special day!
Zara is a busy young lady who plays basketball at BGCSTL Mathews-Dickey, baseball for the Redbird Rookies, and runs track. You can learn more about Zara and follow her journey to completing "Broken Promises" on her Instagram page @Zara_dau.
