Conservation tour educates congressman on NAWCA, GLRI
Ducks Unlimited volunteers, supporters, staff and partners on Oct. 19 toured Rep. Bill Huizenga (MI-2) around the Grand River Open Space, a 122-acre property in southwest Michigan permanently protected by the conservation efforts of DU and Ottawa County Parks. Ducks Unlimited partnered with Ottawa County Parks in 2011 to purchase the land, which contains a mix of wetlands in immediate danger of urban development. The purchase was part of a $1 million North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant. NAWCA along with the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative are two of DU’s largest federal policy priorities. Educating lawmakers about the importance of these core conservation programs and showcasing the investments we are making continues to be a priority activity of Ducks Unlimited. Congressman Huizenga is a dedicated waterfowler and a member of the congressional Great Lakes Task Force.

Wisconsin
State representative tours Green Bay project
Ducks Unlimited volunteers, supporters, staff and partners showcased Oconto Marsh to Wisconsin state Rep. John Nygren (WI-89) on Oct 22. Located near the west shore of Green Bay, Oconto Marsh is a great example of how investments from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund are able to leverage partner investment to receive federal grants that otherwise would be invested elsewhere. The Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund is a state bonding program that generates revenue for on-the-ground conservation across Wisconsin and is one of DU’s highest policy priorities in the state. The program needs to be reauthorized by the legislature and educating decision-makers like Rep. Nygren about the importance of these state-based funding source is a DU priority. Restoration work at Oconto, in combination with the acquisition of adjacent properties by the Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust, will help this area of Wisconsin once again provide the resources required by our cherished fish and wildlife.

Atlantic Experience educates supporters
Ducks Unlimited Canada and Ducks Unlimited presented the Atlantic Experience in October in New Brunswick for DU supporters and conservation enthusiasts. Guests joined conservation experts for three days of ecology, duck biology and leading-edge conservation, along with Canadian waterfowling. The event was based at the Beaubassin Research Centre in Aulac, New Brunswick. The Atlantic Experience showed why the Atlantic coast is so important to North America’s ducks. Participants gained an understanding of the challenges that waterfowl and other wildlife face on this coastal landscape and how employing our science-based approach to habitat conservation provides lasting benefits to the region and waterfowl of the Atlantic flyway. Tours highlighted Ducks Unlimited Canada's work in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island including the Wetland Centre of Excellence at Tantramar High School. Guests enjoyed a lobster and seafood bash as well as a wild game feast, which made for a trip of fellowship, discovery, recreation and collaboration in support of conservation in the Atlantic Flyway.

Doug Lipetzky, director of engineering services for Ducks Unlimited’s Great Lakes/Atlantic Region, will retire Nov. 30. In 1987, Doug was recruited by his friend, Roger Smith, now DU’s Great Plains Region director of engineering, to join the then small GPR staff in Bismarck, North Dakota. While working for the Great Plains Region, he guided hundreds of projects in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa (when the GPR included Minnesota and Iowa). Though he still works out of the Bismarck office, Doug has been directing engineering in GLAR’s 21 states since 2012. Doug’s retirement plans are tentative, but he and his wife, Sharon plan to seek a warmer climate when the snow starts to fly in Bismarck.
