Progress on the Brandon Road Interbasin

Project

On July 1, the State of Illinois, State of Michigan, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) signed a Project Partnership Agreement (PPA) to formally move forward with design and construction of the Brandon Road Interbasin Project. The project, which includes an electric barrier and lock, will be constructed on the Des Plaines River near Joliet, IL. The project will be crucial to preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species, particularly invasive carp, into the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin.

GLLC members have been active in encouraging progress on this project, with resolutions passed by the membership in 2018 and 2023. In June 2024, GLLC members collaborated on a sign-on letter. The letter was sent to the three signatories to express support for the PPA signing. The GLLC is grateful for the leadership of Illinois, Michigan, and USACE in taking this step to protect the Great Lakes ecosystem. The Caucus also recognizes the work of community and advocacy groups in helping move the project forward.
