Message from the Dean

As the dean of FAMU’s School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) I am immensely proud of the dedication and resilience demonstrated by our students. In an era where information is abundant, yet accuracy and integrity are sometimes compromised, it is imperative we continue to graduate skilled journalists who can navigate challenges with professionalism and ethical responsibility. Our commitment to producing graduates who are proficient in journalistic technique, and apply the principles of truth, fairness and accountability is unwavering. By equipping our students with these essential skills, we ensure they are prepared to uphold the standards of journalism that are vital to a well-informed society.

The importance of FAMU graduating skilled professionals cannot be overstated. Our graduates carry a legacy of excellence, determination and cultural awareness that uniquely positions them to tell stories of the underrepresented with authenticity and insight. In a world influenced by digital media, the role of the journalist extends beyond reporting, indeed; it involves critical thinking, investigative prowess and a commitment to the public good. Our graduates are trained to not only report the news, but also scrutinize and contextualize what is being received in order to provide audiences with reliable and insightful information. As they embark on their professional journeys, we are confident that they will contribute significantly to the media landscape systemically fostering informed public discourse. The future of journalism is in capable hands, and we look forward to witnessing the positive impact our alumni will have in elevating voices and stories that matter.
