Take your students on an Amazing Race!
The TV show The Amazing Race challenges teams of 2 to complete tasks and find clues while travelling around the world but you can easily set up your own version of The Amazing Race incorporating outdoor and adventurous activities.
1. Decide on what tasks or activities you would like students to complete while on their “race”. Here are some ideas to consider:
- Knot tying - students are tasked with tying climbing knots or fishing knots
- Plant species naming or identify the edible plant
- Fish species naming
-
Build a mini shelter (see example video here: https://youtu.be/KH_jItIr3YQ)
- Slingshot or target throwing activities e.g. each group must hit a target X number of times
- Rule of 3 review (from the survival skills short course)
- Simulate a canoe/ kayak/ stand up paddleboard trip using scooters and a PVC oar with a rubber stopper on the end of it
- Carry a backpack full of camping or hiking equipment from one location or station to another
- Build a tarp shelter (from the camping module)
- Read a map and answer a map feature question
- “Treat” a casualty in first aid situation e.g. splint or arm sling demonstration
Ideas could come from one unit within the OTF curriculum or multiple units of the OTF curriculum
2. Set up each station with a task card detailing what the students need to complete or demonstrate at a station. You could add orienteering punches as a check in that a student or group of students have visited a station. Stations could be set up in a gym setting or outside and for older students, stations could be more spread out. You could also incorporate different ways of getting from one task station to another e.g. using cooperative movement activities (giant skis/ poly spot stepping stones etc.)
3. Have a central Pit Stop station where students check in with evidence of completing a task or to get information verified before moving onto the next task.
We would love to hear what ideas you came up with!
