Greetings!
I hope this finds you and yours well!
On September 5th, our students were welcomed back with open arms for a new academic year filled with opportunities to investigate and expand learning beyond the classroom through music concerts, art shows, and field trips to places like the
South Street Seaport and Museum
.
Having enjoyed a fun-filled summer, we are thrilled to share that in the coming months our students will continue their learning and embark on a new program in collaboration with
Level Up Village
(read more in the Schermerhorn section below).
An excellent opportunity for students to learn about the world and solve global problems through international collaboration, we look forward to keeping you up-to-date on where this incredible program will take our students next.
Asia? Europe? South America?
Stay tuned!
Till next time,

VAN CLEVE
Our summer school students were very excited to venture to Coney Island and visit the new and improved
New York Aquarium
.
A stunning addition to the Coney Island skyline, this highly interactive exhibit includes numerous hands-on activities that helped students learn about sharks and 115 marine species located off the shores of Brooklyn and Long Island.
These opportunities are crucial to helping our students learn through experience and explore the incredible educational opportunities New York City has to offer.

READINESS
Our youngest students enjoyed an end of summer carnival featuring games, activities, and sensory experiences designed to enhance their fine and gross motor skills.
Designed by our teachers and occupational therapists, each student had the opportunity to practice their balance and coordination by riding down a colorful ramp (pictured here), exploring a bouncy house with their fellow bouncers, and hopping along in a joyous potato sack race.

CAMP WANAQUA
Thank you to everyone who contributed this summer to make Camp Wanaqua an incredible and memorable experience for our campers.
From a
theater workshop
to
horseback riding
and everything in-between, this summer offered campers the chance to try new things and explore new interests that they might not otherwise have access to. Whether new or returning campers, a great time was had by all.

GARDENING
Over the summer, students and Camp Wanaqua campers tended to the school garden to ensure the seeds planted in the spring were growing despite the summer heat and numerous little animals that live in the trees and bushes surrounding the garden.
From eggplants and tomatoes to basil and peppers, their efforts paid off and produced enough food to make an eggplant lasagna that they enjoyed with their peers and teachers. To learn more about this project,

A special thanks for our Building and Maintenance staff who maintain the garden during weekends and school breaks.

AFB: HELEN KELLER ARCHIVE
Helen Selsdon, Archivist at the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), visited with some of our Schermerhorn students to teach them how to access and navigate the newly launched online
Helen Keller Archive
.*
An inspirational opportunity that coincided with what would have been Helen Kellers' 138th birthday, students were eager to learn of the legendary individual whose struggles and accomplishments paved the way for so many to achieve so much.
*The Helen Keller Archival Collection is the world’s largest repository of letters, speeches, press clippings, scrapbooks, photographs, architectural drawings, artifacts and audio-video materials relating to Helen Keller.
|
|
NYISE's archive preserves, catalogs, and disseminates documents and artifacts dating back to the dawn of the education of the blind in the United States.
It is from this archive that we find our photos for #ThrowbackThursdays, including the one pictured here.
