plus a report from our January meeting and volunteer opportunities
February 9, 2018
Greetings!
At the close of January's meeting, we spent some time writing postcards to our state legislators in support of Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). Now there's good news to report! Earlier this week, the Joint Committee on Election Laws favorably reported out the AVR legislation that will help make our voter registration system more accurate, secure, and inclusive. This is an important step toward bringing AVR to Massachusetts!
Both houses of the Massachusetts legislature must now pass this legislation by July 31 and send it to the governor for his signature. However, our goal is to bring the AVR bill to a vote sooner rather than later, so it's important to keep up the momentum. Keep calling and writing and spreading the word!
Minutes from our January meeting are now available; click here to read them on our website. Some key updates:
Members are coordinating smaller League social meet-ups to fill in the gaps between meetings and to get to know each other. If you'd like to arrange a meet-up in your town, let us know! We'll share more information as plans come together.
LWVMA will hold a moderator training in our region sometime this spring. This is an important skill for League members -- let us know if you're interested.
The League will once again hold a forum on running for office in March. We'd like to film it this time for those unable to attend. GCTV provides training and equipment so that community members and organizations can create their own videos. We're looking for volunteers: Is this something you'd be interested in handling?
Our next volunteer service day at Stone Soup will be April 7. Sign up at one of the Doodle polls below. And if you have thoughts on where else LWVFC should spend its volunteer time, contact Christine.
