Sep 2019 Director's Corner
In early August, Cornelius PARC staff noticed an algae bloom forming on the surface of the Robbins Park southern pond. Due to concerns over our fish habitat in the pond, we reached out to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, which then tested all of the ponds at Robbins Park and the nearby Westmoreland Athletic Complex. Test results determined the southern pond contained cyanobacteria, which can produce toxins that are harmful to human health and pets. While there was no easy method to determine if the algae found was actually toxic, we took action to treat the algae and notify the public. We hired a pond management company to treat the algae with a product that is EPA-approved and will not negatively affect any wildlife or native vegetation, installed signs around the ponds to warn park visitors and their pets to stay out of the water, posted additional information about cyanobacteria on our website, and even treated the pond water with Nano Bubble Technology! PARC will continue to monitor for algae blooms in all the ponds and will continue to keep signs posted and provide updates on our website until there is no longer a potential threat. Please remember: "When in doubt, keep pets out!"
