How to Nail Your Year-End Fundraising Emails
|
|
Depending on your organizationās size and constituency, you may want to send more than the number of emails I suggest for the critical year-end fundraising month of December.
If youāre smart, youāll never send less. Because this is the time of year people are feeling most big-hearted and generous. If youāre a savvy philanthropy facilitator, you wonāt want to waste this most wonderful time of the year!
Youāll raise more money this time of year than any other time. People often set aside a certain amount of money to give to friends, coworkers and nonprofits. If you want them to give to your nonprofit as well, itās wise to be proactive.
So, how about adding some extra energy to your email strategy to grab donorsā attention? People miss a lot of emails. Unlike direct mail, they arenāt on the kitchen table for a week or more. Theyāre either opened right away or thatās the end of it. When folks are busy and stressed ā not to mention inundated with other nonprofit appeals ā you may catch them on a day they just canāt be bothered.
So, not sending enough year-end emails is a risky proposition.
Minimize Your Risk of Going Unnoticed
Donāt hamstring yourself by placing your bet on your solitary email finding your would-be donor in a good mood. The odds are against it, with a nonprofit email open rate of 29%.
Give people more chances than that. Here is my advice:
- Send at least a weekly fundraising email during the four-and-a-half weeks preceding the final week of the year.
- Send no fewer than three emails during the last week of the year.
- Sending emails on the last three days of the year (or as close to this as possible to assure only one of these falls on a weekend), according to Steven Screen.
Plan an email strategy ā with a nice mix of alternating monetary appeals and cultivation messages ā that will make folks sit up and pay attention. The best way to set the table so the donor decides to enjoy your feast ā aka whatās inside the email ā is to use a resonant subject line. Be sure all of your emails tap into donorsā needs and motivations, so avoid using phrases like these:
-
ā3 days left to give.ā This wonāt evoke the spirit of generosity or help as much as āThis year, give the gift of music.ā
-
āLast day to grab your tax deduction.ā This wonāt evoke the unselfish feeling of doing unto others as much as āLast chance to give the gift of a meal.ā
Spend More Time on the Subject Line
Remember, donors donāt care about your timelines. Most donāt even care about tax benefits, especially since fewer and fewer itemize deductions. As you write your subject line, consider whatās in it for the donor.
-
Does the issue match their values? āHelp children living in foster care know somebody cares.ā
-
Is there heart-stopping urgency? āUnless you give today, Sonya wonāt have a place to live next month.ā
-
Is there an intriguing question? āWant to know the power of $10?ā
-
Does the beginning of the story intrigue them to want to learn more? āThere was a reason the children drank the dirty water.ā
-
Is there something that evokes curiosity? āThis year record numbers of stray dogs need your help.ā
Carefully Consider the Sender
Arguably the āfromā line is more important than the subject line because... Read more...
