Fundraising, Father’s Day, and the U.S. Open:

A Reflection on Precision and Purpose

Dear AFP Greater Dallas Members & Friends,

As we approach Father’s Day, I find myself reflecting not just on parenthood, but also on the parallels between fatherhood, fundraising, and, thanks to my golf-loving son, the U.S. Open.

Much like golf, fundraising demands patience, strategy, and an ability to recover from unexpected hazards. It’s not always about big swings. It’s about small, consistent actions that move us closer to the green. Whether you're cultivating a major gift or coordinating an annual appeal, precision and persistence matter. Just as golfers study the course, we study our donors, trying to understand what drives them, what moves them, and what brings them back to give again.

Fatherhood teaches us to be present and intentional. We plan while making time for the moments that matter most. Our work in fundraising is also deeply relational. It’s about guiding, listening, and investing in others so they can reach their potential and our missions can flourish.

And then there’s the U.S. Open, a symbol of excellence, endurance, and focus. Watching my son admire the athletes on the television screen, I’m reminded that great fundraising is part art, part science, and all heart. Like a long putt on Sunday, it’s about trust and belief in the outcome.

This Father’s Day, let’s celebrate those who have shaped us and recommit to our work with care, strategy, and purpose. Whether teeing off or launching a new campaign, may every swing bring you closer to your goal.

Warmly,

Manuel Mesa

2025 President, Greater Dallas AFP

A special shout out to Kimberly Patterson, CFRE, our 2025 Be the Cause Chair. Thanks to her hard work and the generous support of our board members, the Greater Dallas Chapter was recently recognized by the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy as one of only thirteen chapters nationwide to reach 100% Board Participation so far. If you haven't already done so or wish to make an additional donation, you can follow your Greater Dallas AFP Board's example by making your own gift to the 2025 Be the Cause Campaign HERE.
