Game 3 at HG (vs Central Goshen Gladiators) Sept. 17

Game Leaders
Tackles:  Coku 7, Lungen 6, Forster 6, Samkoff 5 (FR), Schoonmaker 5 (sack, FR)
Rushing: Wohl 17 – 165: 2 TDs, Bounds 15 – 61: 1 TD
Receiving: Melis: 3 – 29, Goldblatt 2 – 16, Hessert 1 – 10, Forster 1 - 17

Game 3 was a wild card for HG … Central Goshen (CG) HS was a late replacement on Senior Night; team didn’t know what to expect except they heard they were big and physical.

After a memorable ceremony for senior cheerleaders, managers and players, HG took kickoff and ran for a first down before having to pooch punt on 4th down that rolled to the CG one-yard line. CG quickly fumbled in their end zone and HG went up 2–0, Melis returned 22 yards to midfield on the (safety) free kick.  QB Wohl fired a first down to Goldblatt for 13 yards and 7 yarder to Meehan; on fourth and 2, Melis caught a short pass and deftly eluded tacklers for 24-yard gain to the 2-yard line. On third and 8, QB Wohl followed blockers to the right and dove towards the pylon for the TD; 2-point conversion failed.

On their next possession CG ran for a first down before being stopped on downs; tackles by Coku, Rodrigues, McKenney. HG started the second quarter with a couple QB Wohl runs and then teams traded 15-yard penalties. Wohl continued the ground assault with another rushing first down and then found Hessert in the slot for 10-yard pass. Wohl dazzled with a 25-yard rushing TD up the middle; Tucker kicked XP for 15–0 lead. After a couple of CG rushing first downs, HG (Samkoff) recovered a fumble on 24-yard line; tackles by Forster. After two powerful Bounds rushes, including a first down, Wohl accelerated through a hole on the right side and streaked for 52 yards; tackled on the 2-yard line. Bounds rambled to the right and dove into the end zone for a TD; XP blocked, HG led 21 – 0. HG stopped CG on downs again; big tackles by Forster, Coku, Schoonmaker, Lungen and Tucker. Halftime.

During third quarter, both teams’ defenses bent but didn’t break; noted tackles by Forster, Goldblatt, Schoonmaker, Lungen, Coku. A light misty rain was falling as the fourth quarter started; another fumble recovery by HG (Doheny) but HG fumbled it back.  CG finally hit pay dirt with 23-yard rush but HG recovered onside kick (Zarr), Wohl ran 25 yards for first down; Dhanawade punted to the CG 25-yard line on fourth down. Hessert made a surreal one-handed catch from QB Wohl during the drive. HG ran the clock out on CG with two more defensive stops; noted tackles by Melis, Schoonmaker, Goldblatt. 21–7

HG rushed for over 200 yards in third straight game; Wohl 165 yards with two TDs and Bounds 61 yards with first varsity TD. Great effort on both sides of the ball; Coku was a beast as was Samkoff. Fan support was incredible with a sea of orange in the stands.

Next game: HG travels on Saturday, Sept 25, to Peekskill, 6 p.m. kickoff seeking their fourth straight win.
VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER
The GSOC juggernaut continued to gain steam, winning two more games this week.

GSOC improved to a 5-1 record on Tuesday with a dominant 5-1 win over the Walter Panas Panthers. The scoring started early at four minutes when sophomore standout forward Meredith Feiner stole the ball and dribbled in for a quick shot. Three minutes later senior midfielder Jillian Gordon hit a rocket that just missed and deflected to senior forward Hallie Rackoff, who hit a similarly close shot that deflected. Rackoff was an absolute force in the middle for much of the first half effectively delivering the ball and connecting on a couple of solid shots. Goal two came at nine minutes when junior sharpshooter Ramsey Edson assisted Feiner in the box for another score. Meanwhile, Panas kept trying to move the ball up the left sideline but was resoundingly stifled each time by the junior defensive duo of Erica Rosendorf and Fiona Brown; freshman Rowan Edson, taking a turn on defense, also provided strong sweeping that stopped all Panas attempts cold.

GSOC continued to create scoring opportunities, including a
cross-field ball from junior midfielder Syd Mikesell to Gordon, who just missed keeping the ball in play at the goal. At the 30-minute mark, Greeley was awarded a penalty shot just outside the box when Panas pushed senior forward Megan Glasser to the ground. Ramsey Edson hit a perfect arcing shot that caught the upper left corner, making it 3-0. Seven minutes later Ramsey AGAIN delivered to Feiner who AGAIN scored for a hat trick on the evening.

The second half saw junior goalkeeper Finley Pollard take over for senior Kaylin Genda and generate some excitement when Panas managed to get a ball past the GSOC defense on a unlucky bounce; Pollard took the only course available to her and came out to meet the Panas player head on, shutting down the goal with authority but earning a dubious yellow card, requiring her to go to the bench. Junior goalkeeper Skylar Stambleck took over and stopped the well-placed indirect penalty with cool confidence. Fifteen minutes into the 2nd half, GSOC scoring continued when Rowan Edson delivered to freshman forward Rachel Glick who drove the ball down the sideline and cut inside for the end-to-end goal and an insurmountable 5-0 lead. Other standout plays included a masterful drive by junior midfielder Hannah Fetzer past several defenders who then fouled her after she had clearly passed into the 18-yard box; inexplicably the ref placed the ball outside the box for an indirect shot that was stopped; senior forward Molly Byrne had a long drive down the left side and made a beautiful cross in front of the goal that missed the cleats of her charging fellow forwards by nanometers.

On Thursday, GSOC faced a very strong opponent in the Somers Tuskers, but no matter as they played them toe to toe and came out on top in a scoring bonanza to earn an impressive 6-1 record.

The team effort in this game cannot be overstated — every position made key plays and facilitated the win; defenders Carly Elbaum, Brown, Rosendorf, Rowan Edson, Annie Bomback, and Bae Bounds were superb in containing frequent Somers attacks. And it was no surprise to see Feiner pick up where she left off against Panas, scoring the first goal at approximately 20 minutes after a precise assist from Fetzer. Greeley went into the half up 1-0, but Somers answered a couple minutes into the second half after strong passing into the box. But GSOC took the challenge and Gordon made a masterful move down the left sideline, outpacing the defense after an assist from Feiner, and punctuated with a bending shot and a goal. Somers remained revved up, however, and continued to penetrate with strong dribbling and effective passing, resulting in two goals in a row to go up 3-2 with approximately 15 minutes left in regulation. GSOC was having none of it, and on a deflection that went long toward the Somers end line, Mikesell beat the defense to save the ball, dribbled 15 feet laterally and crossed to the perfectly positioned Ramsey Edson for the equalizer with 11 minutes to go. Just a minute and a half later, Edson returned the favor on a Mikesell-Edson-Mikesell combination, but Mikesell wasn’t able to make solid contact with the ball and the goalie made the stop, ultimately sending the game to OT and the crowd to their feet for the duration.

Seven minutes into OT Feiner received a ball from defender Elbaum and dribbled through heavy traffic into the left side of the box and made a superlative shot across the goalie and into the upper right corner, sending the Greeley crowd into ecstasy. It seemed impossible that things could get better, but on the first play of the second half of OT, Ramsey Edson patiently dribbled through traffic into Somers territory and turned toward the goal, hitting Fetzer on the run, who in turn hit Byrne sprinting on her right, who buried the ball in the net for the 5-3 lead. GSOC turned to managing the clock and Somers eked out another goal with 18 seconds left, but the Greeley victory was decisive. GSOC goalkeeper Kaylin Genda had seven saves on the night.
VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY
The Greeley field hockey team ended last week with a definitive win at home on Sept. 17 against rival Fox Lane. The girls won 4-0 over the Foxes. Senior captain Cat Salamida had two goals and an assist. Senior Emma Schwartz chipped in with a goal. Freshman Nina Byrnes also scored her first varsity goal for the Quakers. Senior Hannah Mortman and freshmen Aidan Lane and Mia Brown added assists for Greeley.

On Monday, Sept. 20, the girls traveled to Scarsdale where the contest was a tale of two halves. During the first half the play was very solid and even for both teams, with both sides demonstrating strong offense and defense. At halftime, the score was 0-0.

However, one minute into the third quarter Scarsdale turned it up, immediately scoring off a corner and then following it up a minute later with another goal. Scarsdale controlled the play for the remainder of the game, which ended with Greeley losing, 3-0.

The girls bounced back big time with a resounding win at home over Somers on Wednesday, Sept. 22. It was a full team effort with solid play up and down the field with great passing and teamwork. The girls dominated the field, were awarded 14 corners and converted on many of them en route to defeating the Tuskers, 9-0.

Salamida had a game-high four goals and one assist. Mortman had one goal and two assists. Junior captain Steph Novick had one goal and one assist. Seniors Emma Schwartz and Olivia Pascione each had a goal. Sophomore Dani Halperin scored her first varsity goal. Freshmen Aidan Lane and Mia Brown helped with one assist each. Defense held the line and senior captain Fiona Hayes recorded three saves to get the shutout for Greeley.

Currently, the girls are 4-2 on the season. The team travels to Brewster today (Sept. 24) and next week have three difficult games. On Monday, they travel to Ketcham, on Wednesday they travel to Arlington, and on Friday, Oct. 1, they are back home to take on John Jay-Cross River for Senior Day.
VARSITY BOYS SOCCER
The Greeley boys played through a rough stretch of three games in five days in which they managed to accrue four points. They also tried out a new formation, the 5-3-2 with Damon becoming a center back, Shropshire joining the front line, and Bernbach replacing Larizza to complete the backline.

Considering the pressure that the Greeley defense faced in the first game against the Rye Garnets, it was aptly held under interchanging conditions; from dry, to intermediate, and to torrential. From the start the Greeley wingbacks struggled with positioning and often ended up in no-man’s land. Rye took advantage of the early disarray by heading in a corner to give them the lead. From there on the Quakers steadily improved; their wingbacks choose to sit deep and though this meant a lot more pressing work for the Greeley midfield and forwards, Rye would ultimately be frustrated by this defensive approach. In fact, the pressing by the Greeley midfield would lead to the Quaker’s goal when P. Perez anticipated a pass just in Rye’s own half and played Shropshire in who finished powerfully off the bar and in. The rest of the game followed a similar pattern of Greeley attempting to disrupt Rye’s build-up play in the midfield, Rye being stymied at every turn in Quaker territory by a spirited display by the Greeley defense (including an absurdly dominant display by Mancini), and Greeley trying to hit back off Rye turnovers quickly to significant but ultimately fruitless success. Standouts: Mancini and P. Perez.

The following game against Tappan Zee unfortunately was similar to the earlier game against Ardsley. Weiss came in for Bernbach
and Larizza for Kassel to start. Unlike the game against Ardsley, the Quakers found plenty of space to work with in the midfield and defense as Tappan Zee opted to only pressure near their defensive third. This led to a more patient build-up play from Greeley, however, they failed to break through the well-organized Tappan Zee defense. Instead, opportunities began to appear through other means; counterattacks, set-pieces, and defensive errors. In the end, aside from a few very well worked moves, the Quakers found it hard to trouble the opposition keeper throughout the game until Berwin (who has been earning some more regular time) arced a beautiful last second shot into the net. Unfortunately, the refs deemed it had happened after the clock reached zero and the game went into overtime. The Greeley Boys chased the game for the entire 95+ minutes it lasted, but in doing so, it brought Tappan Zee into the game. Time and again, Tappan Zee jumped on loose balls in front of the Greeley defense and created relatively advantageous numerical matchups. They also looked dangerous from throw-ins into the box where they could put their height to good use. In the end, despite spirited efforts from Greeley's back 3 and numerous saves by Hutchings, a throw-in into the box was deflected multiple times before it was prodded in by Tappan Zee to end the game. Standouts: Katz and 'Hutch'.

Their final game of the five-day stretch against the Port Chester Rams saw an evolution of the style of play they showed against
Tappan Zee. For this game, Kassel replaced Larizzo and Berwin started ahead of Xiang. Like Tappan Zee, the Rams did not provide much in the way of defensive pressure. To the Quakers' credit, they decreased their long ball usage and successfully played the ball out of the back patiently but crisply. The Greeley attack soon enough led to a corner that opened the score. Shropshire delivered an excellent ball into box that Mancini attacked freely and expertly directed into side netting. Though Greeley was control of the game, Port Chester's team has a number of skilled players who found success when attacking the flanks of the Greeley defense. One of these attacks, coming off a turnover by the defense, destabilized Walsh who made contact with the Ram forward in the box which the ref deemed worthy of a penalty. Despite a laborious run-up, 'Hutch' made the save but was left helpless to save the next shot that came off the rebound from the penalty taker. For the rest of the game Greeley tried to build up with plenty of space to operate but were bereft of ideas in the final third. Meanwhile, Port Chester continued to look dangerous the few times they were able to launch a counterattack. Thankfully, for the Quakers, a late throw-in taken by Mancini was masterfully flicked-in by Kassel to seal all three points for Greeley. Standout: Kassel.
VARSITY GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Greeley girls swimming and diving team continues to dominate the field with great swims and big wins.

Monday kicked off the week in the best possible way with a decisive win for the team against Ursuline, 95- 83 . The officials even stopped scoring for the last three events of the meet. Every meet the team keeps adding more and more members to the

VARSITY CHEERLEADING
The first home football game set the background for a great week of cheer. We celebrated our seniors and cheered to an amazing home crowd.

While the rain prevented stunting and tumbling the crowd rallied to our callback cheers. We hope as the season continues, we will be able to show off our stunting and continue with crowd participation.

Thank you to our team parents (especially the seniors) and Mr. Curtis and our coaches for all your support of our team, Christina Schoonmaker and the football for helping to coordinate the night and the crowd for their enthusiasm.

The team looks forward to cheering Greeley football to another win this week!
