GREELEY WRESTLERS BATTLE AT SECTION 1 DIVISIONALS

A season built on heart and drive, the team brought 15 competitors to last weekend's Section 1 Divisionals at Suffern High School.

The highly competitive grouping included wrestlers from Carmel, North Rockland, Pearl River, Fox Lane, Nyack, Peekskill, and Suffern. Greeley's senior wrestlers included Vinny Santelia, Jason Lungen, and captain Luke Richards, who battled in a very competitive weight class. Vinny Sasso, at 189 pounds, secured first place by battling and ultimately pinning his opponent. Other Greeley results included: second place - Diego Villaronga-Cortes and Kai Lueckerath; third place - Corey Fitzsimmons and Andreas Gowdie; fourth place - Zach Haber, Josh Hametz, and Jonathan Kang. With the top four wrestlers per weight class allowed to advance to Section 1 Division 1 tournament this coming weekend (Feb. 12-13), Greeley will be sending eight wrestlers, which is right behind Fox Lane and Suffern.

A strong showing by three Greeley wrestlers Leo Miller, Ava Ametrano and Aarush Kumar at last weekend's JV sectionals.
VARSITY ICE HOCKEY
GREELEY RANKED NO. 19 IN STATE DIVISION II POLL!

Greeley hockey struggled this week against two of the top teams in the area, falling to Clarkstown (9-0) and John Jay (3-0).

Greeley’s hockey team has faced one of the toughest schedules in New York State. Their talent has not gone unnoticed as they are currently ranked No. 19 in the state in Division II by the New York State Sportswriters Association! Congrats boys!!

This is a good opportunity to highlight several Greeley underclassmen who have been major contributors this season and are expected to be the leaders of the team going forward.

Offensively, Greeley has utilized a number of freshman and sophomores to fill in behind the dominant senior first line. Sophomores Ellis Adams, Paolo Ciaramitaro and Ethan Stogsdill have played like veterans and taken on primary roles within the lineup. Freshmen Brody Skala and Phillip Childs have also excelled as regulars in the rotation. Sophomore John Henry Spar had a strong start to his season, derailed by a leg injury, but he will undoubtedly be a key piece of the forward group next season.

On defense, sophomores have been featured in the rotation since the first game of the season, led by hard-hitting Henry Babowal, steady Lionel Yu and versatile Max Schlanger. As the season has progressed, freshmen Chris Marlatt and Cormac Trombley have asserted themselves more and more, becoming key members of the defensive core that Coach Perito has relied upon in all situations. The future is bright for a strong Greeley defense.

The Junior class also has some key players as forward Jacob Schlatner has been a fixture on the second line and scored some key goals this season, while Bryan Ji is a regular contributor to Greeley’s deep defensive group. Ryne Wolberg has been a strong backup goalie and played very well when called into duty, notching his first ever win a couple of weeks ago.

Greeley gets a rematch with John Jay at Brewster tonight (Feb. 11) at 8:30 p.m. and takes on another top-ranked team on Monday (Feb. 14) when they face Mt. Pleasant at Brewster at 4:30 p.m.
VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The Quakers travelled to Somers for a Saturday matinee matchup on Feb. 5. Looking to avenge a home loss to Somers earlier in the season, the Quakers' defense was intense from the start with the team recording three steals in the first quarter alone. Trailing 8-6 after a low scoring first quarter, the Quakers remained tenacious and battled to a 19-14 halftime lead over Somers. The game remained close as the Quakers held onto a slim 34-33 lead heading into the final quarter. Somers shooting improved in the final six minutes of the game, leading them to a hard fought 56-46 victory over the Quakers. Balanced scoring for Greeley was led by Justin Potack with 16 points and four steals, followed by hot shooting Brandon Fitzsimmons with 10 points, Josh Nadel with eight and Connor Melis with seven points and six rebounds.

POTACK SCORES 19 POINTS IN FIRST QUARTER

On Feb. 7, the Quakers hit the road again for a game at Albertus Magnus HS. The Quakers scored a season-high 26 points in the opening quarter to build an early 26-16, led by Potack’s 19 points in the quarter, also a season high. Sophomore Chris Pecora, a recent call-up from JV, entered the game and hit a clutch three-pointer in the second quarter for his first varsity points. After a tight battle on each possession, Magnus closed the gap during the second quarter with Greeley holding a slim 36-35 lead at the half. Magnus picked up its shooting in the second half, pulling ahead 54-44 after three quarters on their way to a 71-53 victory. Potack, who left the game early in the third quarter with a hip injury, led the Quakers with 22 points and three steals, followed by Caleb Reynolds, who scored a season-high eight points with six rebounds and Nadel with six points.

Greeley welcomed Mahopac to HGHS for a Feb. 9 contest, its third game in five days. The teams fought hard right from the opening tip and after one quarter, the game was tied 11-11. Mahopac pulled ahead for a 34-24 halftime lead and carried that lead into the second half, ultimately prevailing by a 68-48 score. Potack led all scorers with 22 points and had four steals. Pecora had a standout shooting performance, scoring 14 points, including four three-pointers and Ben Cohen added four points.

The team wraps up the regular season schedule on Feb. 11 at Yorktown and then it’s on to sectionals next week!
