Nyrah Joseph digs deep to win individual MSTCA girls’ pentathlon state title, while leading Billerica to a repeat team title
|
As she dug for the final turn of the 800-meter run, the last of five events at Thursday’s MSTCA girls’ pentathlon, Billerica’s Nyrah Joseph summoned every last ounce of energy as she was emboldened by her coach, Chandler Jones, whose roars of encouragement reverberated throughout the cavernous Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
“Every second counts, Nyrah!” Jones shouted, loudly exhorting his sophomore runner. “Every. Second. Counts!”
After winning the high jump (5 feet, 3¾ inches) and finishing runner-up in the 55-meter hurdle (8.66 seconds) and fifth in the long jump (16 feet, 10 inches), Joseph needed a strong finish in the 800 to overtake Franklin’s Sarah Dumas, who grabbed the points lead with victories in the 55-meter hurdles (8.53 seconds) and shot put (a personal-record 32 feet, 11¾ inches), for the state title.
A hurdling and jumping specialist, Joseph was beset with nerves and overcome with emotion ahead of the high-stakes final event, given her lack of experience in competitive long-distance running.
But spurred by her coach’s encouragement, Joseph closed with a ferocious finishing kick in the 800 to finish ninth in a personal-record 2 minutes, 35.54 seconds, four spots and four seconds ahead of Dumas (13th, 2:39.54). It helped Joseph earn 625 points, enough to surpass Dumas for the individual state crown with 3,265 points, 21 more than the highly-decorated Franklin junior (3,244).
“It just makes you proud as a coach, to see how hard she can push herself and how mature she’s become,” Jones said. “She’s only a sophomore, and she’s just grown exponentially this year and really learned how to take it seriously and work hard.”
Joseph’s winning performance was bolstered by teammates Brianna Phelan (sixth place, 2842 points) and Julia Nott (17th place, 2,500 points), who combined to help Billerica claim its second consecutive team pentathlon title.
Before Jones arrived at Billerica four years ago, the program had never even competed in the pentathlon, much less dominated it. After the graduation of Paige Murphy, last year’s fourth-place state finisher who is now a freshman pentathlete at UMass Lowell, Joseph was intent on carrying on the program’s legacy.
“This whole pentathlon thing, I really got everything I learned from [Murphy]” Joseph said. “I just kept watching her, and I wanted to be just like her.”
But with her performance Thursday, Joseph eclipsed Murphy’s school pentathlon record, and also established a new standard for herself as she rose to the top of the podium over the meet’s other 109 competitors. With her huge success at a young age, combined with program’s growing emphasis of the competition, Joseph is poised to help Billerica remain a dominant force in the girls’ pentathlon.

Dollars for Scholars Fundraiser
|
The Billerica Scholarship Foundation is honored to have the opportunity to raffle off an NFL autographed football by Lawrence Thomas Guy. Guy is an American football defensive end currently playing for our beloved New England Patriots (since 2017). He
previously played for the Green Bay Packers (2011-2012); Indianapolis Colts (2012-2013); San Diego Chargers (2013-2014); and the Baltimore Ravens (2014-2016).
As a student, Guy received Special Education Services when diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. As a result of his own personal struggles and a strong desire to give back to community, Guy and his wife, Andrea, founded The Lawrence Guy Foundation. Through this organization, the Guys have established a community that gives back to as many different groups and neighborhoods as possible. His kindness shines off the field, where he runs programs such as The Back to School Event, Thanksgiving Giveaway, Shop with a Jock and many more.
Please join us in supporting his desire to help students with their education, by purchasing a $10 raffle from one of our BSF members. To further honor him, this special raffle will be drawn on Guy’s birthday, March 17, 2023. The winner will be announced on our social media.

Health Information: Aimee Montminy Athletic Trainer
1. PHYSICALS- As previously mentioned, this is the most important piece of documentation that the Athletic Trainer needs. If we do not have a current physical on file your student athlete will not be allowed to participate.
Physicals must include
- Date of exam
- something along the lines of "okay for activity/sports"
- A doctor's signature/electronic signature
Please upload a photo/scan to Healthy Roster or email to: amontminy@billericak12.com
If you are a returning student athlete, please check your Healthy Roster account to see when your physical is expiring.
If the Athletic Trainer has it from a previous sports season and it is still current, I do not need another copy.
*Healthy Roster will only let you upload one file per document upload. If your child's physical is more than one page you can upload it as another physical or under the "other" option and I will edit accordingly. Please send all the pages!
2. If your student athlete is seen by a doctor for an injury or illness that causes them to miss practice or a game, I need a clearance note from the doctor. Just a simple letter that says okay to return to sports or not cleared. They will not be allowed to participate until cleared by that doctor.
3. Concussion Courses- Both parent and student athletes need to complete the NFHS concussion course EVERY year. Here are the direct links. Remember you need to choose your state (MA) and then create an account. If you use the same account for both courses, there will only be one name on both certificates, this is fine.
STUDENT: https://nfhslearn.com/courses/concussion-for-students
PARENT: https://nfhslearn.com/courses/concussion-in-sports-2
I am always available to answer any questions through email or phone call.
My job is to keep your children healthy and to return them to their sports as soon as it is safe to do so. I HATE taking them out of their sports just as much as you hate seeing them on sidelines but their health is my number ONE concern.
I'm looking forward to the spring season!
Thanks!

Global Health Leaders Conference
|
On behalf of our Directors of The Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopkins University, I would like to invite the students of Billerica Public Schools who are interested in global health and medicine to apply for our 2023 virtual summer program.
Our international conference is a Johns Hopkins University student and faculty-led program open to students in grades 9-12. Through our conference, students from around the world learn about issues in global health, public health, and medicine through world-class lectures from leaders in these fields, develop connections with like-minded exceptional students, and share their own work and ideas on global health-related topics at the international scale. Featured speakers at our conference have included leading global health researchers, renowned professors, physicians, policy developers, and Nobel Prize winners. In short, the purpose of our program is to reach passionate students of all backgrounds from around the world and develop the next generation of leaders in global health, public health, and medicine.
Virtual conference programming will be held throughout the summer of 2023. The conference consists of a series of multiple virtual events on multiple days throughout June-August 2023. If an admitted student cannot attend parts of the programming live, there will be asynchronous options for students to watch the content they miss. The conference registration fee for admitted students is 99 USD; if the fee places a significant financial burden on a student’s family, financial assistance is available as we do not want the fee to be a barrier for any deserving student. There are also no application fees.
The conference application is available on our website (https://glohea.org) and will be accepted until March 31st, 2023.
Each year, admission into our program is competitive, so we highly encourage your students to apply at their earliest convenience.
Please do not hesitate to email our team at ghlcjhu@glohea.org or visit our website if you would like any clarification or have any questions. We hope your interested students will take advantage of this opportunity, and our admissions committee looks forward to reviewing their applications!
Best Regards,

Families who qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program can get $50 off their monthly broadband bills, thanks to a new, emergency federal program, the U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Communications Commission emphasized in a May 12 meeting.
Low-income families living on tribal lands are eligible for an even steeper discount, $75 a month.
What’s more, students in post-secondary education who receive Pell Grants can also tap the funding. And eligible families can receive $100 in one-time help in paying for digital devices—such as laptops, tablets, and desktop computers—as long as the family contributes between $10 and $50 for the hardware.

The BMHS App provides quick access to timely news and upcoming events. It also allows the user to determine how often and what type of notifications they receive. The first page provides 9 options (not all options are available to all users). The "News" option provides a weekly overview of coming events at BMHS. Currently, this would include all school events including clubs and the Fine Arts performances. We are working on an athletic integration as well. The "Events" option provides access to the BMHS Calendar, Fine Arts Calendar, and soon to be included Athletics Calendar. Each of these calendars is dynamic and encompasses the entire school year. The "My ID" and "Hall Pass" are only available to students and staff. The "Directory" provides access to all Staff emails and, if applicable, phone number. The "Quicklinks" option provides quick access to Aspen, Athletics, Community Pass, Guidance, Clubs, Nutrition, and the BMHS Library sign up form. "Documents" provides access to Bus Routes, Lunch Menus, COVID information, and other documents. The "Map" option provides driving directions to MVC schools and locations for school functions, e.g. Blue Ocean Event Center (location of Senior Prom). The "Language" icon allows the user to convert the app into one of 42 different languages. The phone icon on the bottom of the home page will call our Absentee Line (978-528-8710).
