Faculty vs. Unified Basketball

On March 9, the Spanish National Honor Society hosted its yearly Unified Student vs. Faculty basketball game. Thanks to our fellow faculty members and people on the Unified Basketball team, there was a great demonstration of BMHS’s school spirit! This event also served as a fundraiser for the society with proceeds going to support the Billerica’s Food Pantry, the Children's Department at the Billerica’s Public Library, and PRxPR which is an organization that helps improve conditions in Puerto Rico after its recent hurricane devastation. In addition, another portion of the proceeds from the Unified Game will go to help the team participate in the upcoming Wilmington Special Olympics Unified Game on May 12th! The Spanish National Honor Society looks forward to hosting the next year’s game as well!

The Billerica ambassadors of Project 351 are hosting a Spring Service clothing drive. The drive supports Cradles to Crayons, a nonprofit organization, whose goal is to end clothing insecurity for all children. For this drive, we are accepting clothing donations from sizes newborn to adult medium. They can be new or gently used (except for socks, underwear, and pajamas. These must be new please!) We will be collecting donations from March 20th to the 31st and any donations can be dropped off in the box in front of the office. For more information, contact avaharvey@billericak12.com or sahilgandhi@billericak12.com. Thank you, and we hope you can donate!

2023-2024 Course Requests

BMHS Portal For Course Requests will close on Tuesday, March 21 at 11:59 p.m.

The course request portal opened on Tuesday, March 14 for students currently in grades 8-11 to request their courses for the 2023-2024 school year. Please read through this entire email to understand the BMHS course request process.

The portal will remain open until Tuesday, March 21 at 11:59 p.m. It will close promptly at that time.

Please note that the timing of when you complete your course requests has no bearing on the scheduling process. Therefore, a student who makes their requests on March 14 will not have an advantage over a student who makes their requests on March 21.  This is important to know so that you can take your time and make thoughtful course requests over this week.

If you have questions about a teacher's recommendation, students and parents should contact the teacher directly to discuss your concerns.

If you have specific questions about your child's course request process, please reach out directly to your child's school counselor. This information can be located at the top of each issue of the Green & White.

Counselors will review every student's course requests and ensure that they meet requirements for graduation, as well as aligning with the student's future plans. Counselors will reach out to students and parents with any questions about course requests.

The steps to access the portal are listed below.

STUDENT ACCESS INSTRUCTIONS

1.     Review the Program of Studies to learn more about the courses you can request.  Please review the Program of Studies that has been shared with you in your Google Classroom and under the Documents tile in the BMHS App.

5.     Click on the REQUESTS side tab.

7.     Below the “Primary Requests” is a section called “Alternate Requests”. Click on the select button and choose your alternate requests. These are your back-up courses; in case you are unable to get into a primary requested class. You must choose alternates.

8.     Below “Alternate Requests” is an area for you to write a note to your counselor. Some people may choose to use this function, and others may not feel the need to.

9.     Make sure to POST once you have completed your course requests. This is a critical step, since this is how your course requests are saved in the computer.

Team 4909 Billerica Bionics

Robots Rule in Rhode Island

On March 11th and 12th, Team 4909 - Billerica Bionics competed in the Rhode Island District Event (RIDE) as a part of the 2023 FIRST Robotics “Charged Up” season. This weekend-long event, hosted by Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, RI, attracted thirty high school teams from across New England to compete and cooperate for a coveted win.

RIDE was the Bionics’ first official competition of the season, having won a pre-season event hosted by Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, NH just a few weeks ago.

The gym at Ponaganset High School was packed Saturday and Sunday with tech-savvy teens, encouraging coaches, and vivacious volunteers, all watching the playing field as robots raced to score points. These robots, designed and built by the high school students, operate in autonomous and remote control modes, picking up and placing game pieces in precise locations in the game field. To score extra points, the robots can balance on a rocking platform called a “charging station”.

The first day was a wild RIDE for the Billerica Bionics. Having made significant upgrades to their robot, named “Equinox”, in the past few weeks, the team was eager to put their machinations to the test. After losing a couple matches, the Bionics pulled off some wins, placing 9th at the end of the day. “We’re really proud of our drive team and scouts,” said team strategist Hera Lewis. “We tried hard and did good.”

The second day also had some lows and highs for Billerica’s favorite robot. Near the end of a match, Equinox tipped over, damaging the robot. “It was a really scary moment,” said team captain Anuva Agrawal. “But it was great that we could count on our pit crew to fix the robot quickly for the next match.” The team discovered that a communications problem with the field delayed control commands, causing the robot to jerk forward unexpectedly and fall. The FIRST head referee allowed a rematch, which the Bionics’ alliance won 105 to 84, putting Billerica in 5th place for the playoff tournament.

The playoff tournament was thrilling at the top teams took to the field. The Bionics allied with two other teams to score a win in their first tournament match. Unfortunately, they lost their next two matches, eliminating them from the competition.

But Billerica still had cause for celebration. The Billerica Bionics won the esteemed Excellence in Engineering Award which celebrates a team who demonstrates a professional approach to the design process, and whose design is elegant and advantageous on the field of play.

Additionally, Joshua Marcille was honored as a nominee for the Woody Flowers Award, which celebrates excellence in mentorship. Congratulations Josh!

RIDE was an exciting event for humans and robots alike. The Billerica Bionics team is looking forward to the next competition on March 25th and 26th at Revere High School in Revere, MA. Attendance is free, and all are invited to attend and cheer on the team. “This was a tough competition,” said team member Abhinaba Goswami. “We’re going to do even better in the next game.”

Health Information: Aimee Montminy Athletic Trainer

1. PHYSICALS- As previously mentioned, this is the most important piece of documentation that the Athletic Trainer needs. If we do not have a current physical on file your student athlete will not be allowed to participate.

Physicals must include

  • Date of exam
  • something along the lines of "okay for activity/sports"
  • A doctor's signature/electronic signature

Please upload a photo/scan to Healthy Roster or email to: amontminy@billericak12.com

If you are a returning student athlete, please check your Healthy Roster account to see when your physical is expiring.

If the Athletic Trainer has it from a previous sports season and it is still current, I do not need another copy.

*Healthy Roster will only let you upload one file per document upload. If your child's physical is more than one page you can upload it as another physical or under the "other" option and I will edit accordingly. Please send all the pages!

2. If your student athlete is seen by a doctor for an injury or illness that causes them to miss practice or a game, I need a clearance note from the doctor. Just a simple letter that says okay to return to sports or not cleared. They will not be allowed to participate until cleared by that doctor.

 3. Concussion Courses- Both parent and student athletes need to complete the NFHS concussion course EVERY year. Here are the direct links. Remember you need to choose your state (MA) and then create an account. If you use the same account for both courses, there will only be one name on both certificates, this is fine.

PARENT: https://nfhslearn.com/courses/concussion-in-sports-2

I am always available to answer any questions through email or phone call.

My job is to keep your children healthy and to return them to their sports as soon as it is safe to do so. I HATE taking them out of their sports just as much as you hate seeing them on sidelines but their health is my number ONE concern.

I'm looking forward to the spring season!

Thanks!

Global Health Leaders Conference

On behalf of our Directors of The Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopkins University, I would like to invite the students of Billerica Public Schools who are interested in global health and medicine to apply for our 2023 virtual summer program.

Our international conference is a Johns Hopkins University student and faculty-led program open to students in grades 9-12. Through our conference, students from around the world learn about issues in global health, public health, and medicine through world-class lectures from leaders in these fields, develop connections with like-minded exceptional students, and share their own work and ideas on global health-related topics at the international scale. Featured speakers at our conference have included leading global health researchers, renowned professors, physicians, policy developers, and Nobel Prize winners. In short, the purpose of our program is to reach passionate students of all backgrounds from around the world and develop the next generation of leaders in global health, public health, and medicine.

Virtual conference programming will be held throughout the summer of 2023. The conference consists of a series of multiple virtual events on multiple days throughout June-August 2023. If an admitted student cannot attend parts of the programming live, there will be asynchronous options for students to watch the content they miss. The conference registration fee for admitted students is 99 USD; if the fee places a significant financial burden on a student’s family, financial assistance is available as we do not want the fee to be a barrier for any deserving student. There are also no application fees.

Schools Can Help Families Apply for Federal Help in Paying for Home Internet Access

Families who qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program can get $50 off their monthly broadband bills, thanks to a new, emergency federal program, the U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Communications Commission emphasized in a May 12 meeting.

Low-income families living on tribal lands are eligible for an even steeper discount, $75 a month.

What’s more, students in post-secondary education who receive Pell Grants can also tap the funding. And eligible families can receive $100 in one-time help in paying for digital devices—such as laptops, tablets, and desktop computers—as long as the family contributes between $10 and $50 for the hardware.

BMHS App

The BMHS App provides quick access to timely news and upcoming events. It also allows the user to determine how often and what type of notifications they receive. The first page provides 9 options (not all options are available to all users). The "News" option provides a weekly overview of coming events at BMHS. Currently, this would include all school events including clubs and the Fine Arts performances. We are working on an athletic integration as well. The "Events" option provides access to the BMHS Calendar, Fine Arts Calendar, and soon to be included Athletics Calendar. Each of these calendars is dynamic and encompasses the entire school year. The "My ID" and "Hall Pass" are only available to students and staff. The "Directory" provides access to all Staff emails and, if applicable, phone number. The "Quicklinks" option provides quick access to Aspen, Athletics, Community Pass, Guidance, Clubs, Nutrition, and the BMHS Library sign up form. "Documents" provides access to Bus Routes, Lunch Menus, COVID information, and other documents. The "Map" option provides driving directions to MVC schools and locations for school functions, e.g. Blue Ocean Event Center (location of Senior Prom). The "Language" icon allows the user to convert the app into one of 42 different languages. The phone icon on the bottom of the home page will call our Absentee Line (978-528-8710).
