Dramatic Double-Overtime Victory Ends 47-Year State Championship Drought
The wait is finally over. After 47 years of heartbreak and near misses, the Billerica Memorial High School boys’ hockey team reclaimed their place atop Massachusetts high school hockey with a thrilling 3-2 double-overtime victory over Canton High School in the MIAA Division 2 State Championship at the Boston Garden tonight.
The #3 seeded Canton Bulldogs came into the championship game as formidable opponents, but the Indians proved their mettle in what became an instant classic between two powerhouse programs.
"We're back!" echoed throughout the Garden as players, coaches, and the Billerica faithful celebrated a championship that was nearly half a century in the making.
The championship showdown lived up to its billing as a seesaw battle between two exceptional hockey programs. Canton struck first, taking an early lead and putting pressure on the Indians. But Billerica, showing the resilience that defined their playoff run, battled back to tie the game in the second period.
When Canton reclaimed a 2-1 advantage in the third period, the tension was palpable. With time winding down, it was senior captain Danny Viscione who stepped up in the clutch, burying the equalizer before the Bulldogs knew what hit them. The sudden goal electrified the Billerica crowd and forced overtime.
Throughout regulation and into the extra periods, senior goaltender Steve MacIntosh delivered a performance for the ages, turning away one Canton opportunity after another with acrobatic saves that kept Billerica's championship hopes alive.
As the second overtime period unfolded, fatigue began to show on both sides. But championship teams find a way, and Billerica's dynamic duo of captains connected for the moment that will forever live in town lore.
Viscione, already the hero for his game-tying goal, found fellow senior captain Nolan Dawson with a perfectly placed pass. Dawson, seizing the championship moment, buried the puck into the net for the golden goal—instantly transforming decades of waiting into euphoric celebration.
The championship-winning goal set off a wild scene as players threw equipment skyward and dog-piled onto the ice while coaches embraced and fans erupted in jubilation. The coveted state championship trophy was coming back to Billerica for the first time since 1977.
For longtime residents and hockey enthusiasts, this victory represents more than just a championship. It's a reaffirmation of identity.
Billerica was a hockey town, has always been a hockey town, and tonight, this team reminded the entire Commonwealth that Billerica is still a hockey town.
The 2025 championship team now joins the 1977 squad in Billerica hockey lore, bridging generations of players, coaches, and fans who have supported the program through nearly five decades of pursuit.
As the team returns home with the championship trophy, they bring with them renewed pride and the fulfillment of countless dreams. The message to the Massachusetts hockey community is clear and resounding: Billerica is back.
And for the players who accomplished what so many before them had attempted, their names—especially Viscione, Dawson, and MacIntosh—will forever be etched in Billerica Memorial hockey history.
