Lightning Strikes Twice:
Billerica Boys' Lacrosse Captures
First State Title in 24 Years
| | Indians Complete Historic Season with Thrilling 17-16 Victory Over Reading | |
The rain fell steadily at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon, but nothing could dampen the spirits of the Billerica Memorial High School boys' lacrosse team as they etched their names into school history. In a heart-stopping Division 2 State Championship game that had everything—dominant leads, incredible comebacks, and clutch plays—the Indians defeated Reading Memorial High School 17-16 to claim their first lacrosse state title since 2001.
What started as a commanding performance nearly became a cautionary tale about championship nerves. Billerica jumped out to an impressive 11-4 halftime lead, seemingly in control of their destiny on the rain-soaked artificial turf. But whatever Reading coach said at intermission worked magic. The Rockets stormed back with six consecutive goals, turning what looked like a comfortable Billerica victory into a nail-biting thriller.
The fourth quarter became a chess match of momentum swings and clutch plays. Reading continued their remarkable comeback, eventually knotting the game at 16-16 with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation. The Rockets won the crucial faceoff and appeared poised to set up the game-winning play that would complete one of the most stunning comebacks in state championship history.
Enter junior Timmy Murphy. With Reading controlling possession and time ticking away, Murphy made the defensive play of his young career, stripping the ball from a Reading player and giving his team one final chance. Coach Nickerson quickly called timeout to set up what would prove to be the play of the season.
With nine seconds left on the clock, senior Adam Priest dished to sophomore Jackson Gearin, who found himself with the ball and an opportunity to be a hero. He didn't disappoint. Gearin buried the game-winner, sending the Billerica faithful into delirium and securing the program's first state championship in over two decades.
The celebration was made even sweeter by the presence of seven players who had already tasted championship glory earlier in the school year. Eddie Conley, Brady Graham, Timmy Murphy, AJ Parella, Cam Penti, Adam Priest, and Cam Smith had the unique honor of celebrating their second state championship of 2025, having been members of the Division 2 State Championship hockey team just months earlier.
In a beautiful display of school unity, members of the boys' hockey team packed the stands to support their classmates, returning the favor after the lacrosse players had cheered them on during their championship run. The bleachers were also filled with BMHS staff and students as well as lacrosse alumni, including Grant Whiteway and Mike Fidler, one of the captains from that legendary 2001 championship squad—a perfect bridge between past and present glory.
The victory caps off a remarkable season for Billerica boys' lacrosse and adds another chapter to what has been an incredible year of athletics at BMHS. Despite the challenging weather conditions and the pressure of ending a 24-year championship drought, this group of Indians showed the heart, determination, and clutch gene that defines championship teams.
As the rain continued to fall on Massachusetts Maritime Academy, it couldn't wash away the smiles, the tears of joy, or the memories that will last these players a lifetime. Billerica Memorial High School boys lacrosse is back on top, and after a finish like that, this championship will be remembered for years to come.

| | Junior Book Awards represent one of the most prestigious recognitions available to high school upperclassmen, with many colleges and universities across the United States partnering with high schools to ceremonially award College Book Awards to exceptional high school upperclassmen. These awards celebrate various forms of excellence, from outstanding academic achievement in college-preparatory subjects combined with exceptional leadership in school-sponsored activities to deep commitment to the common good as recognized by institutions like Harvard University. Beyond the honor itself, many of these awards carry tangible benefits, with some colleges offering scholarship opportunities for recipients who choose to enroll at their institution. The selection process recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership qualities, and meaningful service to their school and community. | |
