Local environmental news and happenings for DuPage County.
October 2021
Looking to reduce your textile waste? Join SCARCE for our Textile Transformations Workshop this Saturday, October 2 from 9am-11:30am.

With the holidays coming up, you can learn how to make mittens and energy-saving dryer balls from old or shrunken sweaters. Another hit gift is to make a memory quilt from your child's old high school or college t-shirts. Patty Krein, a former teacher at SCARCE and Our Lady of Peace will be coming from Virginia to instruct on the memory quilts!

For one day only (Oct. 2, 2021), SCARCE will accept donated shoes (used or new) via this workshop in partnership with First United Methodist Church of West Chicago.

Are you an artist? SCARCE has resources for you! Normally, SCARCE only allows teachers and not-for-profits to shop for school and art supplies. However, on two afternoons this October, SCARCE will offer artists and makers the opportunity to shop for used and new, donated art-making supplies. Come check out the materials that SCARCE has to offer at one of our Great Art Events, running October 13 from 4:30pm-6:30pm, or October 16 from 12:30-2:30pm. The fee will be $10/box unless item is otherwise priced. Register and hold your spot for just $5 via the links on our calendar.
Please no pill bottles. Just medication in a Ziploc bag.
Proper medicine disposal is important to both prevent misuse of prescription drugs, but also to protect the environment. Flushing your medication down the toilet can actually pollute our waterways, affecting all the wildlife that live there.

On October 23, 2021, in conjunction with Make a Difference Day, the DEA is hosting its annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Check out this page for details and to find a drop-off location near you. This post has more details about medicine disposal and year-round drop-off locations for your medications in DuPage County.
Volunteer at Your Local Pumpkin Smash
If you're looking to make a big environmental impact in your area, host a Pumpkin Smash! There's still time to host a site for the 2021 Smash. You need at least 30 days to plan. Check out our How to Host Guide here.

Reminder: if you have already organized a site, please fill out our registration form so your location can be advertised on our map!

If you cannot host and want to do more than just attend to dispose of your pumpkin, volunteer at your local site! Check our map of locations and contact the host directly, or email us here if you'd like to volunteer at a site.
LED Bulb Recycling
We are excited to share that all Menards across the U.S. are accepting LED bulbs for recycling!
Learn about effective messaging for water quality topics. This webinar highlights outreach materials that DuPage County Stormwater Management, The Conservation Foundation and other organizations have developed to be used by municipalities, park districts, homeowner associations and others in outreach campaigns. Hosted October 14, 2021, 12pm. More information and registration.
Donate Halloween Costumes
From now until Friday, October 22, SCARCE will accept donations of gently used children's Halloween costumes. This is done in an effort to keep them out of the landfill and to provide costumes to children in need. Please donate within our hours of Tues-Fri 9am-2pm and Sat. 9am-11:30am.
Check out our SCARCEcrows Installment at Cantigny!
Scarce was recently selected as one of several nonprofits to create a scarecrow display at Cantigny. Our wonderful staff and volunteers worked together to create this display which features scarecrows made of all rescued items working together to heal the earth. You can visit Cantigny Gardens to see them and vote for your favorite from now until Halloween. Saturday, October 9 from 10am-4pm Cantigny will be hosting its Fall Festival. SCARCE staff will be on site from 10am-12pm to talk about our SCARCEcrows.

Special THANK YOU to our September Volunteers
  • A group of volunteers from a local UPS toured SCARCE and spent their morning volunteering this past month. They helped us set up our classroom, de-manufacture binders, and sort crayons for our Super Crayons!
  • Montini Catholic Highschool hosted a school supply drive and donated 9 boxes of new items!
Our Reuse Center couldn't function without the amazing individuals that dedicate their time each week to sorting, stocking, and organizing your donations!

If you see them when you visit, give them a round of applause!
